Newsom Announces Abortion Website

California has started a new abortion website for residents and out-of-state women to provide more information about abortion clinics in an to attempt to make the state increasingly abortion-friendly.

In his most recent action going after Republican-led states with pro-life legislation, Democratic Governor of California Gavin Newsom announced the beginning of the website on Tuesday.

“Abortion is legal, safe and accessible here in California – whether or not you live here, know that we have your back. As Republican states continue rolling back fundamental civil rights and even try to prevent people from accessing information online or crossing state lines for care, you’re welcome here in California and we’ll continue to fight like hell for you,” Governor Newsom said in a statement.

The state’s announcement about the website pointed to outside jurisdictions as well, noting, “[a]s other states outlaw fundamental reproductive health care and criminalize doctors and patients, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the launch of abortion.ca.gov.”

The announcement stated that the website is meant to provide “people both inside and outside of California with information about abortions, their legal rights, where to find providers, how to pay for services and financial assistance, ways to locate wellness and emotional support, and more.”

On the site, users are able to type in the name of their city and find an abortion provider. A map of California then appears with abortion clinic locations scattered across the state. Newsom also said the site will not keep personal data about people who come to it, according to Axios.

Newsom discussed the website in a video.

“As Governor Newsom hints at a future presidential run, he is clearly courting the most extreme factions of the progressive movement,” Jonathan Keller, president of California Family Council, said in a press release sent to The Daily Wire. “California has world-class medical facilities, saving and improving countless lives every year. But Newsom is not inviting residents of other states to come here to get care for their unborn children, only to end their lives.”

Newsom has gone after Republican leaders, such as Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, and Governor Greg Abbott of Texas over pro-life legislation and conservative values. He recently bought ad space on Fox News in July criticizing Governor DeSantis.

In the ads, Newsom claimed that people in Florida were having their freedoms diminished. “It’s Independence Day – so let’s talk about what’s going on in America,” Newsom said in the ad. “Freedom is under attack in your state.”

“I urge all of you living in Florida to join the fight – or join us in California, where we still believe in freedom: Freedom of speech, freedom to choose, freedom from hate, and the freedom to love,” Newsom added. “Don’t let them take your freedom.”

The ad was funded by Newsom’s reelection campaign, as the California governor’s recent actions have led to rumors that he may be getting ready for a presidential run in 2024.

“He’s running for president,” Newsom previously told CNN in reference to DeSantis. “I care about people. I don’t like people being treated as less of them. I don’t like people being told they’re not worthy. I don’t like people being used as political pawns. This is not just about him, but he is the poster child of it.”

“Gavin Newsom might as well light a pile of cash on fire,” DeSantis campaign spokesman Dave Abrams told the outlet. “Pass the popcorn for his desperate attempt to win back the California refugees who fled the hellhole he created in his state to come to Florida.”
