NY Dems celebrate Santos’s expulsion from Congress as a major victory
New York Democrats Celebrate Historic Expulsion of Rep. George Santos
In a groundbreaking move not seen since 2002, the House of Representatives voted to expel Rep. George Santos (R-NY) on Friday, sparking a wave of reactions from New York Democrats.
The final vote of 311-114 saw 105 Republicans joining forces with the majority of Democrats, while two Democrats voted against the expulsion and two abstained. The decision came after an extensive investigation by the House Ethics Committee, which presented a damning 56-page report containing “overwhelming evidence” of Santos’ fraudulent activities and other misconduct. As a result, Santos becomes only the sixth lawmaker in history to be ousted from Congress and will immediately lose his House position.
GEORGE SANTOS EXPELLED FROM HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
Following Santos’ removal, New York Democrats expressed their satisfaction and began the search for a suitable candidate to fill the vacant seat in the 3rd Congressional District through a special election.
Jay Jacobs, the chairman of the New York State Democratic Committee, pledged to collaborate with state lawmakers and the governor to nominate the most qualified candidate with the highest chances of success for the 3rd Congressional District seat.
“With today’s House vote to finally expel George Santos from its body, this ends a sorry chapter in the history of our county and our country,” Jacobs stated in a press release. “His loss is a huge win for decency, honesty, and the rule of law.”
Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) now has 10 days to announce the date of the special election to replace Santos. While several candidates have already declared their intentions to run in 2024, local party leaders will nominate a candidate for the special election to complete the remainder of Santos’ term, with Democrats aiming to secure the seat.
“I am prepared to undertake the solemn responsibility of filling the vacancy in New York’s 3rd District,” Hochul shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, following the vote.
Prior to the start of the 118th Congress, Rep. Pat Ryan (D-NY) and other lawmakers voiced concerns about Santos’ false claims regarding his background and campaign finances. Ryan later informed former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) that these issues warranted resignation and should disqualify Santos from serving on committees.
After the vote, Ryan criticized MAGA Republicans for their knowledge of Santos’ dishonesty and association with neo-Nazis and conspiracy theorists. He accused them of prioritizing power over the well-being of the American people and the constituents of New York’s 3rd Congressional District.
“They stuck by his disgusting behavior, all for the sake of power. It’s everything that is wrong with Washington and everything I’ve spent my life fighting against,” Ryan posted on X.
