Laphonza Butler Scrubs Maryland Connections from Bio on X
Laphonza Butler, the incoming California senator chosen by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), has made some changes to her bio on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, removing any mention of her Maryland connections.
Previously, Butler’s bio on X stated that she was located in Maryland. However, as of Monday morning, her location has been removed.
Appointment to California Senate Seat
Butler’s appointment to the California Senate seat follows the passing of Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein at the age of 90 on Friday. Newsom had promised to appoint a black woman as the next senator, and Butler became the chosen candidate. Notably, she is also the first lesbian black woman in Congress.
Beyond social media, Butler’s registration records indicate that she resides in Silver Spring, Maryland, with her mailing address matching her residential address.
President of EMILY’s List
Butler also holds the position of president at EMILY’s List, which is recognized as the “nation’s largest resource dedicated to electing Democratic pro-choice women to office.” However, the organization has recently removed the line stating that she lives in Maryland from her biography on their website.
On social media, Butler expressed her gratitude for accepting Newsom’s nomination to be a senator “for a state I have made my home.” She also pledged to honor Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s legacy by advocating for women and girls, workers and unions, struggling parents, and all of California.
Newsom’s decision to appoint Butler over other black lawmakers and leaders in California, including Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), has drawn attention. The Congressional Black Caucus sent a letter to Newsom urging him to appoint Lee to Feinstein’s seat.
