Netanyahu says his arrest warrant is a ‘political shield’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor karim Khan of using an arrest warrant against him as a political shield to divert attention from allegations of misconduct. Netanyahu argued that Khan’s actions, including canceling planned visits and pursuing warrants for personal and political reasons, aimed to distract from claims against him and to rally Israel’s enemies. The ICC issued arrest warrants in November 2024 for Netanyahu, former defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas leader Mohammed Deif over alleged war crimes connected to Gaza’s conflict following Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack. Netanyahu has consistently rejected ICC’s jurisdiction over Israel, denouncing its actions as politically motivated, especially after allegations surfaced against Khan, who is under scrutiny for sexual misconduct allegations. Netanyahu also claimed that Khan celebrated the october 7 attack, accusing him of fomenting hate and exposing the ICC’s alleged corruption and injustice.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused International Criminal Court prosecutor Karim Khan of using the court’s arrest warrant against him as a “political shield,” to deflect attention from allegations of misconduct against the prosecutor.

Netanyahu argued the case was intended to divert attention from allegations of misconduct against Khan. “It was precisely as these allegations emerged that he canceled his planned visit to Israel, abandoned his previous commitment to thoroughly examine Israel’s independent judicial system, and suddenly moved to pursue arrest warrants against me and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant,” Netanyahu wrote on X.

Netanyahu further alleged that Khan pursued the warrants for personal and political reasons rather than based on the merits of the case. “He did so to divert attention from the allegations against him and to rally Israel’s enemies around him as a political shield,” Netanyahu said.

The ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in November 2024 over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity related to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza following Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack. The court simultaneously issued a warrant for Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif.

Netanyahu has consistently rejected the ICC’s jurisdiction over Israel and has denounced the court’s actions as politically motivated, noting that Khan’s “political shield has now been torn away.”

“What has been exposed is not only Karim Khan’s true motivation, but also the profound injustice and corruption that have infected both the Office of the Prosecutor and the International Criminal Court itself,” Netanyahu said.

Khan is facing mounting scrutiny and could be removed from his positions as member states prepare to vote this month following an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct, according to CNN.
