Nearly a Ton of Cocaine Washes up on French Beach

A nearly ton of cocaine was found by the French maritime police on February 26, when it was washed up on a beach in northern France.

France’s maritime authority for North Sea and English Channel stated that the drugs were located near Reville, on the Cotentin Peninsula.

Authorities said that the cocaine was approximately 1,875 lbs (850 kilograms) and found in two large bags linked together by a rope.

The police are investigating whether or not the drugs were deliberately floated onto the coast for traffickers to take.

Another report, AFP, citing unnamed sources, said that additional drugs had been found on the French coasts on March 1st.

The Rise of Drug Smuggling

The rise in cocaine and crack smuggling has led to unprecedented drug violence.

Rotterdam, the Netherlands and Antwerp (Belgium) have been the major gateways for Latin American drug cartels to Europe.

On Feb. 14, two Dutchmen, aged 27 and 46, were arrested by Belgian police, and almost 8,818 pounds (4,000 kilograms) of cocain
