Navy technician killed in freak accident on secret mission: Report

A

cryptologic technician for the U.S Navy died while on a secret mission in an undisclosed country in 2021. According to an internal investigation obtained by the Navy Times, Cryptologic Technician Technical 1st Class Robin Collins, 26, and her team were operating in a building during a freak windstorm when the roof of the building collapsed, causing Collins’ death. Collins was only three days into her deployment at the time of her death on July 18.

The storm unexpectedly caused intense weather conditions, transforming the calm sunny day into extreme winds of around 90 mph, which were strong enough to tear the roof from the chimney, according to the teammates. Although the rest of her team was able to evacuate the building, Collins was buried under rubble and subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy revealed that Collins had died of “mechanical asphyxia due to compression of the chest and abdomen.”

Cryptologic technicians, who typically collect and analyze electronic intelligence, operate and maintain electronic sensors and computer systems, and provide technical and tactical guidance to different operations, such as surface, subsurface, air, and special warfare operations. Collins was based out of Naples, Italy, but the location of her death in the undisclosed country was redacted in the report.

Collins is the second cryptologic sailor to die on a mission in recent years. In 2019, Cryptologic Technician Senior Chief Shannon Kent died in a suicide bombing in Syria, along with three other U.S. service members during that incident.

Collins enlisted in the Navy in 2016, and she had served in Naples since 2020. She is survived by both parents, her twin sister, a brother, and several other family members.
