Natural Remedies For Depression

You can’t watch TV these days without seeing advertisements for pharmaceutical treatments for depression. The current ads offer drugs to take in addition to the drugs you’re already taking that aren’t working. This would be funny if depression wasn’t widespread, incapacitating, and potentially fatal. It would be funnier still if these pharmaceuticals weren’t linked to an increased likelihood of suicidal or homicidal behavior. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV (or the DSM IV) is the diagnostic manual that mental health professionals use to diagnose mental illness. It is currently in revision and will soon be published as the DSM V.

There are several classifications for depression:  Adjustment Disorder with Depressed Mood, Dysthymic Disorder (which the DSM V seeks to reclassify as Chronic Depressive Disorder), Major Depressive Disorders, and Bipolar Disorders. Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder is proposed to be included in the DSM V.  If you’ve been paying attention to big pharma ads, you know there is already a pill to treat Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, before it has been officially included as a diagnosis. There is no blood test or microscopic evidence to diagnose depression. The objective and subjective observations are used to diagnose depression. The pervasiveness and persistence of feelings of sadness and worthlessness, guilt or inappropriate guilt and sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, and thoughts of suicide or death are all common.

It is quite interesting to observe that there are also symptoms. It can be insomnia or excessive sleeping. You can have a decreased or an increased appetite. Psychomotor agitation and retardation may be present. Grieving, which may be called an Adjustment Disorder with Depression Mood, may include all the symptoms of depression but not its duration. It can be ongoing or episodic. Seasonal Affective disorder is also known as Seasonal Depression. What causes depressive symptoms if they are not caused by grief? Conventional medical treatment focuses on brain chemistry.  Again, they treat the symptom and not the cause.

The Foundation for any Natural Remedy for Depression

The brain is a body organ, and like everything else on the body, it’s health is dependent on gut health. Health starts with good nutrition, exercise, detoxification, and the prevention of any symptoms or diseases. Eliminate all processed foods, sugar substitutes, corn syrup and artificial flavors, colors, preservatives MSG, hydrogenated oil, caffeine, alcohol nicotine, drugs, GMOs and other harmful substances. Avoid soy and allergens. A diet high in organic, fresh, and raw fruits is recommended (more vegetables than fruits).

Get some vitamin D. The best source of vitamin D is sunlight. If you have depression, you may need to supplement with vitamin D or light therapy. Also consider healthy fatty acids and B vitamins (a complex, not just one or two). Depression can be caused by environmental toxins, heavy metals and mold. Stop using any and all artificial fragrances, including (but is not limited to) cologne, perfume, soap, shampoo, candles, air fresheners, household cleaners, and detergents.

Exercise. Yes, we know it’s the last thing you want to do when you’re feeling lethargic due to depression. Studies have shown that exercise can be just as effective in treating depression as medication. Which one is better?

Get good sleep. Get up early in the morning to go outside and enjoy the sunrise. This is a great day to take a stroll. If you have insomnia, it is a good idea to get up in the morning so your internal clock can be reset. If you have been sleeping around the clock, it is important to get out of bed. Now, the part that’s hard to face.

Every chronic condition can be attributed to conscious or unconscious choices. Our lifestyle, diet, partners, and commitment to health are all choices we made. Anyone who is suffering from an ongoing disease owes it their health to ask the tough question. “What am I getting out of this? What does being depressed do for me?” Until we face the truth and discover what being ill gives us, it is nearly impossible to make the changes required to recover.  It is crucial to face the truth about depression and anxiety when we are dealing with an illness like this. If someone really wants to beat depression, they can’t. In today’s society, we tend to adopt a self-indulgent victim mentality. Too often, we define ourselves by our loss or traumas. “I am a rape victim.” I am an incest survivor. I am a quadriplegic.” These labels and, too often, the support groups designed to help us, perpetuate the victim mentality. Psychotherapy can be a powerful tool to gain insight and change your thinking and behavior. Therapy is only as effective as the skills of the clinician. It also depends on the motivation of each client. You should choose a good therapist, someone who understands the mind-body link. Don’t be afraid to do the work.

Exercise is the best natural remedy for depression

There are many options. Each option has its own benefits. All exercise decreases stress hormones and increases endorphins, which are natural chemicals in the body responsible for elevating one’s mood. Exercise can also release adrenaline, dopamine and serotonin. These natural chemicals are vital for good mental health. Here we’ll list our top four choices for fighting depression naturally. And we recommend, if possible, to exercise outdoors and in nature. High-Intensity Interval Training is a great program. HIIT increases speed and power quickly, and it is great for getting your body to release a lot more endorphins. It’s also a great choice for someone who is trying to find excuses for not working out, as it takes much less time than a good yoga session or a long run. The weight lifting can increase testosterone. Both men and women can be depressed if they have low testosterone. A quick way to improve your body’s appearance and muscle tone is weight lifting. This can help you feel better about yourself, which is a problem for anyone with depression.

Yoga is a wonderful exercise that can rejuvenate, energize, heal, balance, and restore the body, mind and spirit. It is well-known for its many benefits. However, it can also be a rewarding hobby. Running, swimming, and biking are just a few of many rewarding hobbies that are easy, inexpensive, and most rewarding. Bicycling is a great example, though it can be more costly if you are serious about it. You may have heard of a “runner’s high?” It’s an amazing feeling. It takes time to get into the kind of physical condition to reach the runner’s high, but it’s such an amazing, surreal, euphoric feeling. It’s impossible to describe it in words.
