National pride increasingly split by party lines: Survey

A recent Gallup Poll highlights a important decline in national pride among younger generations in the United States, especially among Democrats. Only 41% of generation Z report being “extremely” or “very proud” to be American, reflecting a consistent downward trend in patriotism across generations. While Republican pride has decreased from about 80% among millennials to 64% in Gen Z, democratic pride has fallen even more steeply, with only 24% of Gen Z Democrats expressing strong pride in their country.

Historically, national pride peaked at 90% following the September 11 attacks but has now dropped to 75% by 2011. Currently, 36% of Democrats and 53% of independents express a high sense of pride, compared to 92% of Republicans. Factors contributing to the decline in pride include political divisions, economic pessimism, and negative perceptions of both major parties. Additionally, many left-leaning Americans desire a more moderate Democratic Party, while some right-leaning individuals want a similar shift in the republican Party. This decline in national pride has persisted through both the Trump and Biden administrations and has not rebounded after the COVID-19 pandemic.
