Emancipation Proclamation to be permanently showcased at National Archives Rotunda.

The Emancipation Proclamation on Permanent Display at the National Archives

The National Archives and Records Administration made an exciting announcement on Saturday. They revealed that the Emancipation Proclamation, President Abraham Lincoln’s historic order to free all slaves in the United States, will now be permanently displayed in the rotunda. This momentous decision was made in celebration of Juneteenth.

Dr. Colleen Shogan, the Archivist of the United States, confirmed that the Emancipation Proclamation will join other significant documents such as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. In a statement, Dr. Shogan expressed her pride in this decision, saying, “Although the full privileges of freedom were not immediately bestowed upon all Americans with Lincoln’s order, I am proud that the National Archives will enshrine this seminal document for public display adjacent to our nation’s founding documents. Together, they tell a more comprehensive story of the history of all Americans and document progress in our nation’s continuous growth toward a more perfect Union.”

As it is a double-sided five-page document, its original pages will be rotated on a regular basis to limit light exposure while it is displayed. Photography of the document will continue to be prohibited.

In commemoration of this significant event, the rotunda will have extended hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern time on Monday. Visitors will have the opportunity to witness this historic display.

The Significance of Juneteenth

Juneteenth, which became a national holiday last year, holds great importance in American history. It marks the day when Texas became the first state to recognize Juneteenth as a holiday in 1980. This day symbolizes the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and serves as a reminder of the ongoing journey towards equality and justice.
