NAACP warns against travel to Florida due to DeSantis’s DEI restrictions.

NAACP Issues Travel Advisory for Florida Over Alleged Racism

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has issued a travel advisory for Florida, citing increased racism against black people. The advisory was issued by the board of directors, who claim that Governor Ron DeSantis’s move to restrict Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs in education has made the state hostile to all non-white and LGBT people.

On Monday, DeSantis signed a bill that banned public colleges and universities in the state from allotting money to diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. The NAACP travel advisory warns that “Florida is openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals.” It urges travelers to understand that the state “devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by African Americans and other communities of color.”

NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson has called the fight against racism in Florida existential in nature, accusing DeSantis of threatening democracy and the “democratic ideals that our union was founded upon.” He invited others to join the NAACP in “the battle for the soul of our nation.”

Chair of the NAACP Board of Directors, Leon Russell, said that “Governor Ron DeSantis and the state of Florida have engaged in a blatant war against principles of diversity and inclusion and rejected our shared identities to appeal to a dangerous, extremist minority.”

DeSantis has previously criticized DEI programs as constituting discrimination, saying in several speeches that the acronym should stand for “discrimination, exclusion, and indoctrination.”

What Governor DeSantis Said About the Advisory

When asked about the travel advisory, DeSantis called it a “joke,” according to Florida Politics. He added that Florida is proud to be leading the nation in tourism and that the state has had as good a year as ever.

Join the NAACP in the fight against racism and discrimination in Florida. Let’s work together to create a more inclusive and welcoming state for all.
