Joe Manchin pledges to oppose judicial nominees without GOP backing
Joe Manchin’s Bold Move: His Personal Judicial Filibuster
Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) is gearing up for retirement, but he’s not fading into the background just yet. He’s set to shake things up on his way out, particularly concerning judicial nominations.
According to a report by Politico, Manchin unveiled his plan to stage a personal “filibuster” by refusing to support any of President Joe Biden’s judicial picks without Republican backing.
His stance is clear: without bipartisan support, he won’t be swayed. Even the support of just one Republican would be enough to earn his approval.
Manchin’s Call for Bipartisanship
Joe Manchin emphasized his desire for bipartisan collaboration and urged his fellow lawmakers to reach across the aisle in search of Republican votes.
He voiced his frustration, stating, “Just one Republican. That’s all I’m asking for. Give me something bipartisan. This is my own little filibuster.”
Manchin further expressed his exasperation, insisting, “If they don’t have a Republican, I’m opposing. That’s my way of saying: ‘I’m leaving this place, I’ve tried everything I can. Don’t tell me you can’t get one.’
“You’ve got to ask them,” Manchin urged, specifically naming potential allies among Republicans like Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Lindsey Graham.
Preserving the Filibuster
Amid discussions about abolishing the legislative filibuster, Manchin stressed his commitment to safeguarding this procedural rule. He rallied donors to press candidates on their stance regarding maintaining the filibuster.
