Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons confirmed there were three casualties from the shooting but did not disclose who they were based on preliminary information.
“It could be employees, it could be civilians that were visiting the facility, it could be detainees,” Lyons said of the victims who were shot. “At this point, we’re still working through that.”
Two detainees were killed in the shooting, according to local news reports.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also confirmed there were “multiple injuries and fatalities” and that the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The motive remains unclear.
“While we don’t know [the] motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them. It must stop,” Noem said. “Please pray for the victims and their families.”
The shooting occurred around 7 a.m. at an ICE office near an interstate highway.
Dallas police are searching for a possible sniper or multiple shooters on top of buildings in the vicinity, a Dallas-area ABC affiliate reported. The condition of the victims is unknown and were taken to the hospital.
There was a large police presence on the highway near the crime scene, according to videos posted on social media.
The FBI field office in Dallas is assisting local police on the ground.
“The obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop,” Vice President JD Vance said in response to the shooting. “I’m praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families.”
