At least two dead and three injured after shooting at Rhode Island hockey game

Two people were killed and three others were injured in a targeted shooting during a high school hockey game at the Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, on Monday. The shooter is dead, reportedly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and authorities say the attack appears to be targeted and linked to a family dispute. Police Chief Tina Goncalves and Governor Dan McKee expressed their condolences and noted that support services would be available for those affected; federal agencies, including the FBI, assisted at the scene, though officials said there was no imminent public threat and no formal request for FBI help. A Fox News report citing ATF sources claimed the shooter may have killed his wife and three children before taking his own life, but this detail has not been officially confirmed in the article. The story is described as developing.

At least two dead after ‘targeted’ shooting at Rhode Island hockey game

At least two people have died after a shooting at a high school hockey game in Rhode Island on Monday.

One suspect opened fire during a hockey game at the Dennis M Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, killing two people and injuring three others. The suspect is also dead. According to Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves, the shooting is believed to be “targeted.”

“It was a Senior Night — a time for them to celebrate and to remember. It’s very unfortunate that this happened today,” Goncalves said. “Again, we’re trying to offer some services. We have the Rhode Island EMA. We have the federal EMA out there.”

“We’ll do anything we can for the outreach to make sure that these kids are getting some kind of support in the days to follow,” she said. “Obviously, it’s going to all settle in probably later tonight or tomorrow for them.”

Goncalves said the shooting, rooted in a “family dispute,” killed one person at the scene. Another died from their wounds after being transported to the hospital. The suspect is reported to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene.

Goncalves declined to give the identity of the shooter, the victims, or the relationship between them.

A source with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told Fox News that the shooting was a murder-suicide, adding that the suspect was an adult male who shot his wife and three children before turning the gun on himself — with only one of his three children surviving.

Gov. Dan McKee (D-RI) issued a statement acknowledging the tragedy and expressing sympathy for the victims and their families.

“As Governor, a parent, and a former coach, my heart breaks for the victims, families, students and everyone impacted by the devastating shooting at Lynch Arena in Pawtucket. Praying for our communities,” McKee posted on X.

The FBI responded to the scene of the shooting and offered its resources to local authorities.

“At this time, there is no imminent threat to public safety and there has been no request for FBI assistance,” the FBI Boston field office posted on X. “However, the public should continue to avoid the area. Our prayers are with everyone impacted by this incident.”

This is a developing story.
