Over 75% of voters support age limit for politicians: Poll.
A Majority of Voters Support Age Limits for Elected Office, Poll Finds
A recent poll conducted by CBS News and YouGov revealed that a large majority of voters believe there should be age limits for those pursuing elected office. The survey, conducted at the end of August, found that 77% of respondents agreed with the idea of age limits.
Within this group, 40% of respondents proposed an age limit of 70 years old, which is over ten years older than President Joe Biden’s current age. The second most popular age limit, suggested by about a quarter of respondents, was 60 years old.
Increasing Support for Age Limits with Age
Interestingly, as the respondents’ age increased, their approval for age limits tended to increase as well. Among respondents over the age of 65, 74% preferred an age limit. In the age group between 30 and 65, 75% of respondents believed in the necessity of age limits. Even among the youngest age group, 18 to 30, 68% of respondents saw a need for age limits. This support for age limits was consistent across political affiliations, with approximately 70% of Republicans, Democrats, and independents approving of the idea.
The median age of members in the Senate is 65, according to Pew Research, while the House of Representatives has a median age of 57. Additionally, one-third of U.S. senators are over 70 years old, including President Biden and former President Donald Trump, who is currently the front-runner for the Republican nomination for president in the upcoming year.
The poll also explored respondents’ opinions on younger political hopefuls. 47% of respondents believed that having more young people in office “would make politics better.” Similarly, 45% expressed the same sentiment about women, 41% about racial minorities, and 32% about members of the LGBT community. In contrast, only 12% believed that older people would make politics better.
The survey, which included more than 2,000 adults, had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 points.
