More films halted by WGA strike.

Writers Guild of America Strike Halts Film Productions

For the fifth consecutive week, the Writers Guild of America strike has brought the production of many films and television programs to a standstill. With 11,500 writers on strike, negotiations for higher wages have failed, resulting in the first work stoppage in 15 years.

“I can’t talk about that, but I can say that we have been having meetings. We’ve put the meetings on pause in solidarity with the writers,” Spider-Man actor Tom Holland told Variety. “There’s been multiple conversations had, but at this point, it’s very, very early stages.”

Marvel’s fourth installment of the Spider-Man series and the film Unstoppable, produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s production company, have been affected. Although Spider-Man 4 was not filming yet, Jennifer Lopez was already on-site for Unstoppable when filming was brought to a halt.

Protests and Pauses

Unstoppable’s film set, near the University of Southern California, was met with protesters as early as 4:30 a.m. Picketers appeared at the set for the first time, even though a source reported to Deadline that the movie has been filming for two weeks. In the film, Jharrel Jerome is playing Anthony Robles, a three-time All-American wrestler born with one leg who won a national championship at Arizona State.

Unstoppable is the second film out of Affleck and Damon’s production company, Artists Equity, which most recently produced Air, a film surrounding Nike’s creation of the Air Jordan shoe.

Netflix Shareholders Show Support

These pauses in production come as Netflix shareholders voted against compensation packages for its top executives in protest of their proposed plush 2023 pay in a show of support of the Writers Guild of America strike.

Across the industry, Writers Guild of America negotiators are asking for a total of $429 million. Writers Guild of America Negotiating Committee Co-Chairman Chris Keyser issued a video statement Friday assuring members, “June will bring us all some answers.”
