Montana House Votes To Punish Transgender Member Who Said Colleagues Have ‘Blood On Your Hands’

Montana House of Representatives Censures Transgender Lawmaker

The Montana House of Representatives, led by the GOP, voted to censure State Rep. Zooey Zephyr, a transgender lawmaker who identifies as a woman. Zephyr had criticized colleagues who supported legislation banning transgender surgeries for minors, telling them they had “blood on their hands.” The vote was along party lines, and Zephyr is now barred from attending or speaking at floor sessions but can vote remotely for the remainder of the session.

Despite being silenced by Republican leadership, Zephyr defended herself, saying, “If you use decorum to silence people who hold you accountable, all you are doing is using decorum as a tool of oppression.”

Earlier this week, Zephyr held up a microphone as supporters disrupted the proceedings of the Montana House while chanting “Let her speak!” The commotion led to several arrests.

Expulsion was also a possible punishment for Zephyr, but she remained defiant, tweeting, “I will do as I have always done—rise on behalf of my constituents, in defense of my community, & for democracy itself.”

Republicans Condemn Violence

Montana House GOP leadership condemned the violence that erupted during the proceedings, saying, “Today’s riot by far-left agitators damages our discourse and endangered legislators and staff. Their actions did not represent Montana values.”

Earlier this month, the Tennessee House expelled two Democrats for joining with protesters who stormed the state Capitol and demanded more gun restrictions following the mass shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville. They have both since been reinstated.
