‘Moment of the greatest sadness’: King Charles III commemorates Queen Elizabeth II

Recently elevated King Charles III, the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II, commemorated his mother’s death, describing it as “a moment of the greatest sadness.”

“The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much loved Mother,” he said in a statement.

Charles, 73, is now the oldest king to ascend to the throne in the county’s history. His mother, who reigned over the United Kingdom since 1952, died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland after 70 years on the throne. She was the U.K.’s longest-reigning monarch.

“I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world. During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held,” he continued.

Doctors had been monitoring the queen’s health throughout the day and later revealed that she died. Elizabeth’s grip on the throne spanned over 15 prime ministers and outlasted 12 U.S. presidents. She assumed the crown in 1953 when she was 27.
