McConnell Pushes Back Against Critics After Senate Border Deal Collapse
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is facing criticism from within his own party following the collapse of the Senate border deal. However, McConnell is not backing down and reminding his critics that they had an opportunity to remove him from his leadership position after the 2022 election.
“I’ve had a small group of persistent critics the whole time I’ve been in this job. They had their shot,” McConnell said.
After a disappointing 2022 election for the GOP, McConnell faced a challenge to his leadership role from Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL). However, McConnell emerged victorious in a 37-10 vote, solidifying his position as Senate minority leader.
McConnell also took aim at some of his Republican colleagues, accusing them of pushing for a border deal despite knowing it would require approval from Democrats who control the White House and the Senate.
“The reason we’ve been talking about the border is because they wanted to, the persistent critics,” McConnell explained. “You can’t pass a bill without dealing with a Democratic president and a Democratic Senate.”
The Senate border bill, which was the result of months of negotiations led by Sens. Chris Murphy (D-CT), James Lankford (R-OK), and Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ), faced heavy criticism from Republicans in both the House and the Senate. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) declared the bill “dead on arrival” in the House, and McConnell eventually admitted that it had no chance of passing.
Despite the backlash, McConnell remains steadfast in his position and is determined to navigate the challenges of a divided government.
