The Grim Reality of the Missing Submersible: A Dire Situation

The founder of RMS Titanic Inc. recently shared a somber update on the search for a missing submersible, painting a bleak picture of the chances of finding any survivors. G. Michael Harris, an experienced Titanic expedition leader, appeared on Fox News to discuss the distressing situation.

Harris revealed a personal connection to the submersible, stating that he knew three of the individuals on board, with one of them being a former co-worker. However, he delivered disheartening news to host Jesse Watters, explaining that there seemed to be no solution to the critical oxygen shortage on the craft.

“We carry O2 bottles with us in the submersible, and you also have CO2 scrubbers,” Harris responded when asked about potential remedies for the oxygen situation. “The O2 will last longer than your CO2 scrubbers, and if those CO2 scrubbers go, and depending on what actually happened at depth — just not feeling good about it.”

When questioned about the involvement of the U.S. Navy, Harris expressed little hope, stating, “No. No, I mean, I don’t see anything that can happen at this point.”

He went on to emphasize the extreme dangers of the deep-sea environment, comparing it to outer space. Harris stressed the importance of meticulous planning and adherence to protocols, highlighting the risks involved in diving to such depths. He also mentioned the added complexity of having inexperienced tourists on board a newly created submersible.

“I mean, I’m trying to be somewhat cautious and don’t want to basically be the naysayer of what’s going on. But when you’re talking 6,000 pounds per square inch, it is a dangerous environment. More people have been to outer space than to this depth of the ocean. And when you’re diving in these situations, you have to cross your t’s and dot your i’s. You have to do everything absolutely perfect and by the book, and throw in a bunch of tourists in a new sub that was just created over the last several years — it’s not looking good, Jesse.”

According to the expedition leader, his team suspects that something went wrong with the submersible’s hull, resulting in an implosion at a depth of approximately 3,200 meters. Given this assessment, he sadly concluded that there was little hope of rescuing those trapped inside the craft.
