Minnesota’s Dem governor slams Biden admin over rebate check taxes
Gov. Tim Walz Slams IRS Decision to Tax State Rebates: “It’s Bulls***”
Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat from Minnesota, didn’t hold back his frustration when discussing the Internal Revenue Service’s decision to tax the state’s one-time tax rebates. These rebates, ranging from $260 to $1,300 per eligible taxpayer, were sent out earlier this year. Walz called the decision “bulls***” during a press conference, expressing his disbelief at the Biden administration’s stance.
Minnesota Misses COVID-19-era Exemption
The state’s rebates will now be federally taxed, although they won’t be taxed by the state for tax year 2023. Unfortunately, Minnesota missed the COVID-19-era exemption by 15 days due to the federal coronavirus emergency ending in May. Over 2.1 million rebates were distributed by the state, and recipients will receive a form to include the rebates in their federal taxes for 2023.
Instructions for Filing Taxes
The Minnesota Department of Revenue has provided instructions for rebate recipients on their website. They will send Form 1099-MISC to all recipients, which should be used when filing U.S. individual income tax returns for 2023. To account for the rebate, individuals should subtract it from their Minnesota taxable income on line 33 of Schedule M1M on their state return.
Reissuing of Checks
The rebates were issued between August 16 and September 27, with the state recently beginning to reissue uncashed and expired checks on November 13. These reissued checks will be valid for 60 days.
