Military strikes second drug ship headed to US, killing three ‘terrorists,’ Trump says

President Donald Trump ordered the military to conduct a kinetic strike against a vessel in the Caribbean area on Monday, the second this month.

“The Strike occurred while these confirmed narcoterrorists from Venezuela were in international waters transporting illegal narcotics (A DEADLY WEAPON POISONING AMERICANS!” headed to the U.S.,” Trump said Monday afternoon on Truth Social, adding that “3 male terrorists” were killed.

Trump did not say who was on the ship or what intelligence it had that proved it was a drug-smuggling vessel heading for the United States, but said they were from Venezuela.

His post included the unclassified video of the strike, which shows the vessel floating in the water, the strike occurring, and the vessel subsequently being engulfed in flames.

“BE WARNED — IF YOU ARE TRANSPORTING DRUGS THAT CAN KILL AMERICANS, WE ARE HUNTING YOU! The illicit activities by these cartels have wrought DEVASTATING CONSEQUENCES ON AMERICAN COMMUNITIES FOR DECADES, killing millions of American Citizens,” Trump added.

This is the second such strike the military has conducted this month. The first one killed 11 people.

Right before the first U.S. strike, the vessel altered course and appeared to turn around, according to the New York Times.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Monday that he didn’t know if that was accurate, but said it didn’t change its intent.

“I can tell you that irrespective — there’s a network. And the way this network runs is speedboats with multiple 350-horsepower engines, four of them. They carry drugs to somewhere in the Caribbean,” he said in an interview on Fox News.

“So this is the network, the route that they run. We have 100% fidelity and certainty that that boat was involved in that trafficking of those drugs that ultimately were destined to reach the United States of America. And the president’s made clear: Interdiction alone is not going to stop these drug traffickers,” he continued. “What needs to start happening is some of these boats need to get blown up. Some of these boats need to be not just intercepted but stopped, no matter what direction they plan to head.”

U.S. Southern Command, which oversees the area where the strike occurred, declined to comment to the Washington Examiner, instead referring the outlet to the White House.

The U.S. Coast Guard is traditionally the military service branch that conducts operations of this nature. It most frequently interdicts ships, arrests those on board if illegal substances are found, and then affords them due process.

The Trump administration has taken a much more aggressive posture toward cartels in the Western Hemisphere than previous administrations, and the military strikes, instead of interdictions, are one aspect of its strategy.
