Mike Johnson emerged victorious in the House speaker battle. How did conservatives fare?

Did Conservatives Win with Rep. Mike Johnson as‍ Speaker of the⁤ House?

On Wednesday, Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) emerged as‍ the victor in the ‍election for speaker of the House. But the real question is: Did conservatives come out on top?

When eight Republicans joined⁤ forces with House Democrats to remove former Speaker ⁤Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), they argued that ⁣a more conservative speaker was ⁣possible. This move was met with⁢ mixed reviews ⁤among rank-and-file Republican voters.

On paper, Johnson seems to fit the bill. His conservative ratings from the 2022 Conservative Political Action Conference ‌(formerly American Conservative‍ Union) were at an impressive 91%. Over his six-year career, his lifetime rating stands at 91.87%.

These ratings surpass McCarthy’s scores of 82% and 84.08%, as well ‌as House ⁤Majority Leader Steve Scalise’s (R-LA) 2022 rating of 82% and lifetime ⁢score of⁤ 91.43%. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) had lower ratings of 73% and 79.63%.

However, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) was the only candidate ‌for speaker who was rated as more conservative than Johnson, with perfect scores of 100% ‍for ‌last year ⁤and his entire 16-year tenure in Congress.

Despite Jordan’s conservative ⁣credentials, he⁣ did not come close to securing the speakership. In fact, he received fewer votes on the floor than House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) ⁣each time. Eventually, Jordan lost support from ‍25 Republicans and was removed as the ⁣nominee.

One reason McCarthy was elected as⁢ speaker in the first place‌ was that no one from the Freedom Caucus‍ had enough votes to assume the role. Jordan was seen as the most likely candidate from ⁣that faction, but the experiment ⁢failed.

The theory was that McCarthy‌ could make certain commitments to appease conservative holdouts ‍and secure their support on the 15th ballot. However, many House conservatives were dissatisfied with McCarthy’s handling of the debt ceiling and a⁣ temporary government funding bill.⁢ Some were even‍ ready to oust him immediately.

Now, Johnson steps⁢ in as the new speaker. While he is not a member of the Freedom Caucus, he is considered to be Freedom Caucus adjacent. He has garnered goodwill across the ⁤conference, which will⁢ be crucial as the next government ‍shutdown deadline approaches.

Previous speakers, like Newt Gingrich and Dennis Hastert, faced ⁤their own‌ challenges with conservative revolts. The Republican Party has seen intraparty fights over federal spending intensify over time, leading to the loss of control in the House in⁢ 2006.

Johnson’s alignment with former ⁣President Donald Trump on ⁢the 2020 election ‌certification has already drawn attention from Democrats. ⁤However, the real test will be how he handles spending issues.

Conservative members of Congress have long argued that Republican⁤ leaders need to ⁤take a tougher stance ⁤on spending negotiations with‍ Democrats. They believe that leveraging shutdowns and the federal debt limit is necessary.

Only⁣ time will ⁢tell if Johnson can bring a different‍ approach and a different outcome to the table.

What⁤ factors hindered ⁤Jordan’s ability to secure enough support to win the nomination?

Enure. But Jordan did not ⁤secure enough support⁢ from his colleagues to win ⁣the nomination.

Despite‍ Johnson’s high conservative ratings, some conservatives expressed skepticism about his ability to effectively ⁣lead and‍ advance conservative values. They argued that his previous experience⁤ as an attorney and his lack ‌of executive⁢ leadership experience might hinder his ability to effectively navigate the political landscape and make strategic ⁤decisions.

Additionally, ⁣some conservatives were disappointed with Johnson’s stance on certain issues. For example, he voted in favor ⁣of the bipartisan ‌infrastructure bill, which many conservatives⁢ considered to be excessive government spending and a ⁢departure from conservative‌ principles.

However, there are others who believe that Johnson’s election as speaker ⁣could still be a win for conservatives. They argue that, compared to the other candidates, Johnson represents a more solid conservative choice. They believe that his track record and voting history demonstrate his commitment ⁢to conservative values and principles.

Furthermore, Johnson’s election as speaker could provide an‍ opportunity for conservatives to shape the legislative agenda and have a stronger voice in policy decisions. With a conservative speaker at the helm, conservatives may have a better chance of advancing their priorities and enacting conservative policies.

It is⁣ important to note that⁤ the ⁢role of the speaker of the House is not ‍solely about advancing conservative values. The⁤ speaker’s‌ primary responsibility is ⁤to lead the House and ensure the effective functioning of legislative‍ processes. This includes managing debates, assigning ⁤committee assignments, and overseeing the legislative agenda.

Ultimately, whether conservatives win with Rep. Mike Johnson as speaker ⁣of the House will depend ⁤on his⁤ ability to effectively lead and advance conservative priorities.‍ It will also depend ⁤on the actions and decisions of ‍the House as a whole.

Conservatives will be closely⁣ watching Johnson’s leadership and the direction he takes the House. They will be looking for him to uphold conservative principles and work towards advancing conservative policies. Only time ⁢will tell if Johnson’s election as speaker will be a win for conservatives.
