Mike Johnson will visit Columbia on Wednesday to address the concerning increase of antisemitism on college campuses
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) will visit Columbia University on Wednesday amidst ongoing pro-Palestinian protests at the college and nationwide. Columbia is at the forefront of student demonstrations supporting the Palestinian cause and condemning Israel. Concerns about antisemitism have been raised by Congressmen visiting the campus, with Johnson scheduled to engage with Jewish students during his visit.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) will visit Columbia University on Wednesday as pro-Palestinian protests continue at the college and on campuses across the country.
Columbia is experiencing the most visible in a wave of student protests taking hold over several major universities, most of which are focused on support for the Palestinian cause and condemnation of Israel. Congressmen have raised concerns of antisemitism, with some having visited Columbia to voice their displeasure already. Johnson on Wednesday is set to be the latest high-profile lawmaker to make the journey to New York City, paying a visit to the campus to speak with Jewish students.
“On Wednesday, April 24, Speaker Johnson will visit with Jewish students at Columbia University,” a notice from Johnson’s office said. “Following the meeting, he will deliver remarks and take questions regarding the troubling rise of virulent antisemitism on America’s college campuses.”
Other House Republicans will travel alongside Johnson, including Rep. Anthony D’Esposito (R-NY).
“Tomorrow, I will meet with Jewish @Columbia students alongside @SpeakerJohnson to offer our full support as they celebrate #Passover — all while antisemitic bigots lay siege to their school,” he said. “@HouseGOP will always stand firmly against antisemitism.”
D’Esposito was part of a previous House Republican delegation that traveled to the campus shortly after the protests began. The group called on Columbia’s president to resign.

Meanwhile, the university has been dealing with days of pro-Palestinian protests and pro-Israel counterprotests as well. On Tuesday, Columbia announced that most classes would move to become hybrid for the rest of the semester.
“Safety is our highest priority as we strive to support our students’ learning and all the required academic operations. It’s vital that teaching and learning continue during this time,” the announcement read.
