Mike Johnson backs Max Miller’s reelection bid despite abuse allegations
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) expressed support for Rep. Max Miller (R-OH) despite allegations of domestic violence and child abuse. Johnson defended Miller, calling him a “great member of Congress” and stating he is working through personal issues while noting that the House Ethics Committee is investigating the allegations. Miller has denied the accusations made by his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, which include severe abuse, and has called for an ethics inquiry into himself to clear his name. The Ethics Committee announced an investigation in August, but its findings are not expected before the November elections due to procedural delays. Miller continues his reelection campaign, asserting his support remains strong and denying any wrongdoing, even as he faces ongoing allegations and investigation.

When asked Monday if he supported Miller, Johnson said “yes,” and that Miller has been a “great member of Congress.”

“He has some issues in his personal life he’s working through,” Johnson said before noting that the House Ethics Committee is conducting an investigation into the allegations.
“We have to let due process play out,” Johnson said.
Johnson routinely defers to ethics investigations when asked about allegations of members of his conference.
Miller has been accused by his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, the daughter of Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH), of abusing both her and their 2-year-old daughter. Miller has denied the allegations and continued his reelection campaign despite pressure for him to drop out.
The embattled Ohio congressman has attempted to bat down the accusations leveled by his wife, which include throwing hot water from a skillet at her body, holding a gun to her head, and fracturing their daughter’s collarbone, calling them “politically motivated” earlier this week.
Earlier this month, Miller called for a House Ethics Committee investigation into himself, saying he would “file my own paperwork for an ethics investigation into myself to clear my name from these horrific attacks on myself and family.”
“I have absolutely nothing to hide,” Miller wrote on X.
The House Ethics Committee announced its investigation into Miller on Aug. 4, saying it was looking into allegations that Miller engaged in domestic violence and abuse or illegal drug use.
However, the committee’s investigation is not expected to come out before the November elections, as the panel’s reelection 60-day blackout period is set to begin on Sept. 4. The Ethics Committee’s work often takes months if not years to complete.

Miller previously claimed that Johnson was still supporting him during an interview on CNN, saying that the speaker and “everyone else” were “standing behind” him.
“No one has told me to get off the ballot, and that’s because they know I can win this seat,” Miller said.
