Michelle Obama’s “Healthy” Drink Fails to Meet Standards

Former first lady Michelle Obama’s new “health drink” has come under fire for not being as healthy as advertised. Bloomberg reports that her brand of drinks, Plezi Nutrition, would not meet the same school lunch regulations she championed during her time in the White House.

Experts Critical of Plezi Nutrition

While Obama is pushing these drinks as a healthier alternative to sodas and sugary drinks, experts are critical of the new line of drinks. “Most were critical of the new line of drinks,” Bloomberg reports. “At the heart of the matter is whether ‘healthier than soda’ is good enough for a product aimed at children as young as 6, especially one that comes with Obama’s endorsement.”

Additives Disqualify Plezi Drinks from School Lunch Programs

While the Plezi drinks contain less sugar than its competitors, they also contain additives that disqualify them from school lunch programs. Natural sweeteners, such as those based on stevia leaf and monk-fruit extracts, are in the drinks. While they make for better numbers on the nutrition label, there is ample growing concern about the consumption of too much of them, especially among young children. All four of the Plezi flavors have those additives, meaning that they wouldn’t be allowed to be served in American elementary and middle schools.

Embarrassing Gaffe for the Obamas

For the image-conscious Obamas, this is an embarrassing gaffe that will only embolden those who accuse the former first family of being hypocritical elitists. Regardless of whether Michelle Obama runs for president in the future, this is not the best look for the Obamas.
