Michael Douglas praises Biden’s sharpness before Hollywood couple’s fundraiser

Michael Douglas supports President Biden’s reelection bid, praising his mental acuity and dismissing age concerns. The actor, close‍ in age to Biden, highlights the president’s capabilities and contrasts them with his predecessor. The fundraiser,‍ co-hosted by Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones,⁢ aims to secure support for Biden’s campaign. Attendees ⁣can contribute between $3,300 and $100,000, emphasizing the event’s significance in current politics.

Michael Douglas defended President Joe Biden seeking a second term in office, waiving aside concerns many voters have about the president’s age, ahead of a scheduled fundraiser co-hosted by the actor and his wife, actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, this week.

Douglas, 79, is only a couple of years younger than Biden, and suggested that the president is doing well for his age. He added that Biden’s Cabinet wants to work for him again for the next four years, something he could not say about “the other candidate,” a knock against former President Donald Trump, the presumptive presidential candidate for the Republican Party.

“Well, I think that I walk a little similar to him, and the people that I‘ve talked to, and everybody that I have say he’s sharp as a tack,” Douglas said on CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS Sunday. “He‘s fine, we all have an issue of memories as we get older, we forget names, something, he‘s overcome a stutter in life.”

The actor also argued that Biden would continue to be mentally fit to be president for the next four years, as the country needs a president who has “some experience” and knows how to work on a global stage. He also described the election as the most important one of his lifetime.

The fundraiser will take place in Irvington, New York, on Thursday. Attendees must be a “U.S. citizen or lawfully admitted permanent resident (i.e., green card holder),” with tickets ranging from $3,300 to $100,000.

Douglas was also one of five actors who appeared in a video call to give Biden advice ahead of his 2024 State of the Union speech, with all of the actors having played a U.S. president at one point in their career. Douglas played President Andrew Shepherd in the 1995 film The American President.

You may’ve heard I’ve got a big speech coming up.

So, I thought I would hear from some folks who have done the job before – sort of. pic.twitter.com/7wFYVQm7Xm

Biden, who became the oldest president ever to get elected at the age of 77 in 2020, has some concerned about him seeking a second term due to his age. These concerns increased in February when special counsel Robert Hur released his 15-month investigation into the president on his handling of classified documents, which described Biden as a “well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory.”

In December, Biden revealed that he was not sure he would be seeking reelection if Trump was not running for president again, stressing that “we cannot let him win.” Trump led Biden by 1% in a poll from earlier this month, though his lead is significantly tighter than polling data from two months ago, which showed him leading Biden by 5%.
