Meta Rolls Out New Verified System Similar To Twitter Blue

Meta has unveiled a verification system on Facebook and Instagram similar to the one created by Twitter.

Meta Verified was launched on Friday by the company’s social media platforms. Instead of giving accounts blue checkmarks because they are a prominent figure, the checkmark can be used by any user to verify that the account’s authenticity. This system is very similar to Twitter Blue, which Elon Musk unveiled after taking over Twitter.

“The meaning of the verified badge has been updated to represent authenticity,” Instagram stated this on its help site. “An Instagram account with a verified badge next to its name now means that Instagram has confirmed that it is the authentic presence for that person or brand. Previously, the verified badge also required the person or brand to be notable and unique.” The company stated that users who were validated under the old rules would still be able to use their blue checkmarks.

“The verified badge is a tool to help people find the real accounts of people and brands,” Instagram has been added. “If an account has the verified badge, we’ve confirmed that it represents who it says it does. A verified badge is not a symbol to show importance, authority or subject matter expertise. We don’t use the verified badge verified to endorse or recognize public figures or brands.”

Public figures who sign up for Instagram Verified can’t change their username or transfer their blue checks.

Although Facebook has yet to update its help website in line with the new policies, Meta posted some additional information on its website. In addition the blue check, users have proactive account protection from impersonation and exclusive features on Facebook stories and Instagram Stories. They also have direct access to support teams on both sites.

Meta Verified is more expensive than Twitter Blue. Twitter Blue is $8 per month for users on the web, while iOS and Android cost $11 each. Meta Verified costs $11.99 per month for web users and $14.99 for mobile users. Users must pay separately to verify their identity on each platform.

Meta is not just rolling out services that are similar to Elon Musk’s Twitter. After some Left-leaning users sought alternatives to Twitter, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, is now considering a text-based, decentralized social media platform.

P92 is the codename for the initiative. It can be accessed with existing credentials by Instagram users and Facebook users. Adam Mosseri (who oversees Instagram) is leading the project.

The revelation comes weeks after Instagram introduced a notes feature through which users can create short posts using text and characters.

The new social media site would be centered upon verification badges, followers and likes, posts with previews, and other features similar to those currently offered by Twitter, according to a report from MoneyControl, which first broke the news of the initiative.

As disillusioned Twitter users search for alternatives, Meta announced the plans for the new platform. Mastodon has a few accounts, with a variety of independent nodes that have their own codes of conduct and privacy policies.
