Mercenary leader alleges betrayal in Russian rocket strike, plans protest at Defense Ministry.
The Leader of a Powerful Mercenary Group Denounces Russian Government
The leader of a powerful mercenary group within Russia made a bold statement on Friday, denouncing the Russian government and accusing them of attacking his forces. Yevgeny Prigozhin, chief of the Wagner Group mercenaries, called Russia’s military leadership “evil” and declared that they must be stopped.
The Guardian described his comments as a “virtual declaration of war,” highlighting the gravity of the situation. While no conflict has been reported as of Friday evening, The New York Times noted that this incident marks the most dramatic internal conflict within Russia since President Vladimir V. Putin’s invasion of Ukraine began 16 months ago.

In an audio message, Prigozhin stated, “A missile attack was launched on the camps of Wagner Group. Many victims. According to eyewitnesses, the attack was launched from the rear, meaning it was launched by the Russian Defense Ministry.” He called on people to join their cause and help uncover the chaos within the country.
Will Russia Fall into a Civil War?
A translation of Prigozhin’s comments was posted on Twitter, revealing his determination to punish those responsible for attacking his soldiers. He warned that anyone who resisted would be considered a danger and destroyed immediately. He also expressed his intention to restore justice in the army and for the whole of Russia.

Despite the tense situation, Prigozhin urged everyone to remain calm and not succumb to provocations. He assured that the presidential authority, government, and other departments would continue operating as before. The Russian Defense Ministry responded by initiating a criminal case against Prigozhin for calling for an armed rebellion.
Prigozhin also criticized the war with Ukraine, stating that it was unnecessary and driven by a desire for glory. He accused Russian defense officials of incompetence and deception, claiming they fabricated the threat of aggression from Ukraine and NATO.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this conflict within Russia will develop and whether it will escalate into a civil war.
