Megan Rapinoe Faces Humiliating Outcome in Potentially Last USWNT Match at Home

In sports, farewell tours are a common occurrence when beloved athletes retire.

Take, for example, the recent NBA retirements of Dirk Nowitzki and Dwyane Wade, who were showered with gifts and adulation throughout their final season.

Had NFL quarterback Tom Brady made a timely decision about retirement, he would have received a similar treatment (and possibly saved his marriage).

Even if a star athlete doesn’t receive a grand farewell, they usually get something as a sign of honor.

For instance, NBA legend Reggie Miller ended his career with a home loss in the playoffs, but the opposing coach burned his timeouts just to give Miller’s fans extra time to show their love.

Similarly, Megan Rapinoe, a polarizing soccer star, recently made what is likely her final appearance with the U.S. Women’s National Team on her home turf.

However, unlike Miller, Rapinoe, one of the most famous (and infamous) women’s soccer players in American history, received little fanfare in her U.S. swan song.

The national anthem protester, LGBT activist, and anti-Trumper has made it clear that this is her last stand. One would assume that the game between the U.S. and Wales, which took place in San Jose, California, near Rapinoe’s hometown, would have been the perfect opportunity for her own Reggie Miller moment.

However, instead of a celebration of her legacy, Rapinoe received nothing. She didn’t even play.

According to The New York Times, Rapinoe found herself on the U.S. women’s national team bench, hundreds of miles away from her hometown, after publicly announcing her retirement plans the day before.

While it’s possible that Rapinoe wasn’t called to play for various reasons, such as her declining performance, it’s still surprising that she didn’t get a token appearance in front of her family and friends.

Even Wade and Nowitzki were given special recognition in their final year in the NBA All-Star Game.

Despite being healthy and medically cleared to play, Rapinoe was left out of the game. It’s unclear why she was benched, but it could be because the game was relatively meaningless and the World Cup games were approaching.

Regardless, this omission is a disappointing end to Rapinoe’s career and a humiliating move for the outspoken soccer star.
