Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Democrats’ infrastructure plan “goes way beyond what the idea means to working Americans.” McConnell shared his criticism in a tweet Thursday along with a clip of him speaking about the topic in Kentucky.

The Republican lawmaker acknowledged there was broad bipartisan support for tackling the issue. However, he said the $2 trillion proposal laid out by the Biden administration was a trojan horse for tax hikes and bad liberal policies.

McConnell has remained hopeful there will be enough Democrats who don’t support the plan so it could get reworked.

“They have very narrow majority in the House and a really, really narrow majority in the Senate,” McConnell noted. “Hopefully, there will be some Democrats that share our views that we ought to tackle infrastructure in a more modest way, targeted at the problem and credibly paid for, rather than adding it to the national debt.”

McConnell reiterated he supports an infrastructure overhaul, but only considers that to include items like roads, bridges and broadband.
