McConnell Publicly Opposes Jan. 6 Commission After Meeting With GOP Senators

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell publicly came out against a Jan. 6 commission Wednesday after meeting with Republican Senators.

McConnell, who said Tuesday that Republicans are undecided on whether a Jan. 6 commission is needed and said that he is willing to listen to any arguments, said he opposes the commission after much consideration in a speech on the Senate floor.

“After careful consideration, I’ve have made the decision to oppose the House Democrats’ slanted and unbalanced proposal for another commission to study the events of January the 6th,” McConnell said in his floor speech.

“There is, has been, and there will continue to be, no shortage of robust investigations by two separate branches of the federal government,” McConnell said.

“It’s not all clear what new facts our additional investigation, yet another commission, could actually lay on top of existing efforts by law enforcement and Congress,” he added.

The proposal was agreed to by Democratic Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson and Republican New York Rep. John Katko and would create a commission of five Democrats and five Republicans to investigate the Jan. 6 Capitol riot’s “interference with the peaceful transfer of power” and “influencing factors that fomented such an attack.” (RELATED: Mitch McConnell Says Republicans Are ‘Undecided’ On Jan. 6 Commission)

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy announced his opposition to the bipartisan proposal. McCarthy has said he would like the commission to investigate violence committed by Black Lives Matter and Antifa throughout the summer of 2020, as well as the Capitol riot. (RELATED: Biden White House Calls For 9/11-Style Commission Into Jan. 6, Increased Security At Capitol)

“Given the political misdirections that have marred this process, given the now duplicative and potentially counterproductive nature of this effort, and given the Speaker’s shortsighted scope that does not examine interrelated forms of political violence in America, I cannot support this legislation,” McCarthy said. (RELATED: Republicans Split On Jan. 6 Commission As McCarthy Announces Opposition)

Republican Sens. Marco Rubio and Mitt Romney have both said they are in favor of the commission.

The House will vote on the Jan. 6 commission Wednesday night.
