McCarthy denies promising to erase Trump’s impeachments, as claimed by Trumpworld.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy Denies Promise to Expunge Trump’s Impeachments
According to sources close to former President Donald Trump, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has denied promising to expunge Trump’s impeachments. This revelation comes after McCarthy questioned Trump’s strength to win the election last month, causing frustration for the former president.
McCarthy has been careful not to publicly back Trump or any other candidate in the 2024 nomination contest, in an effort to avoid further division within his caucus. However, Trump has expressed his disappointment that a top Republican like McCarthy isn’t fully supporting him.
“He needs to endorse me — today!” Trump reportedly said.
In an attempt to appease Trump, McCarthy allegedly made a promise that the House would vote to expunge his impeachments before the August recess. However, McCarthy denied the existence of any deal to reporters, stating that while he supports expungement, there is no formal agreement.
Representatives for McCarthy did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
Since becoming House Speaker, McCarthy has walked a fine line, owing his position in part to Trump’s endorsement. Now, Trump is demanding that McCarthy fulfill what he believes is a debt owed to him.
Last month, Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene and Elise Stefanik introduced a resolution to expunge Trump’s impeachments. McCarthy initially stated that he would consider the resolution, but emphasized that Republicans had other priorities at the time.
Members of the House have expressed concerns about the potential vote, including the possibility of it not passing, exposing divisions within the conference, and embarrassing Trump.
Trump reportedly brings up the promise on every call with McCarthy, as his team’s patience wears thin.
When asked about his endorsement in the Republican primary race, McCarthy stated that he has not made a decision yet but expressed his high regard for President Trump.
