Mayorkas acknowledges 600K immigrants entered US illegally and evaded capture this year.

Border Patrol⁤ Unable to Arrest Over 600,000 Immigrants Who Illegally Entered the US, Says Biden Official

According to a ⁢Biden administration official, the Border Patrol has observed but failed to apprehend more than 600,000 immigrants who illegally entered the⁢ United⁤ States ‍in the past year. This‍ is in addition to the 2 million individuals that agents were able to apprehend and arrest.

During a Senate hearing, Department of Homeland Security⁤ Secretary‍ Alejandro Mayorkas revealed ⁤that⁢ hundreds of thousands ⁤of immigrants who crossed‌ the border⁤ illegally from Mexico or Canada in fiscal 2023⁢ managed to ‌evade ⁢being encountered, screened, or vetted.

“That number ⁣is over 600,000,” Mayorkas confirmed in response⁣ to a question from Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS).

Between October 2022 ‌and September 2023, U.S. Border Patrol agents and cameras on the border tracked approximately 600,000 unidentified individuals who‌ slipped into the country. However, due to the overwhelming workload, agents were unable to apprehend everyone.

Sen. Marshall questioned⁣ Mayorkas about the criminal backgrounds ⁢of these “gotaways,” asking how⁣ many⁢ had convictions for rape or murder‍ in their home countries and how many had been previously deported from the United States.

Mayorkas‌ defended the DHS’s handling of the border situation, ⁢stating that the ⁤United States is facing an‌ “unprecedented” number of displaced‍ individuals across the Western Hemisphere. He ‌also emphasized that the country’s broken immigration system, which Congress has yet ⁢to address, is exacerbating the border crisis.

When ⁤asked if any of the 600,000 “gotaways” posed a risk to Americans, Mayorkas explained⁣ that illegal immigrants who meet specific criteria,⁣ such as‌ terrorism affiliation, espionage, and select aggravated⁤ felons, would be arrested and deported under the guidelines implemented by the Biden administration.

Sen. Marshall expressed his concern, stating, “This is why I believe the defining issue in this ‍next election is⁤ going to be exactly this, ‘Are our families safer⁤ today ‌than ⁤they were three years ago?'”

Additionally, Sen. Marshall inquired about the countries of origin of the 169‌ known ⁤and suspected terrorists arrested by Border Patrol ‍agents at the U.S.-Mexico border in 2023. Mayorkas declined to provide this information publicly but offered to discuss it in a ‍private setting.

How has the⁢ Biden administration’s approach‍ to immigration contributed to the increase ⁤in unauthorized border crossings?

Were not ⁣caught by Border Patrol agents. Mayorkas stated‍ that⁣ the number of apprehensions was‌ only a fraction of the total ‌number of‌ unauthorized border ⁣crossings.

This revelation ⁣has raised concerns about the effectiveness ‌of the ⁢Border⁣ Patrol in securing the nation’s borders. It highlights the challenges⁣ faced by law enforcement agencies in ‍dealing with the surge in illegal immigration.

The Biden administration has been under ⁢scrutiny for its approach⁢ to immigration, with critics arguing that ‌its⁤ policies have contributed to⁤ the increase in unauthorized ⁣border⁢ crossings. The administration’s decision to halt construction of ⁤the border wall and enact more lenient immigration policies has been accused of sending ‍a message that the United⁤ States is open to illegal⁢ immigration.

However, Mayorkas‍ defended the administration’s approach, stating that the current ⁢situation at the border is ⁢complex ‍and requires a multifaceted response. He⁢ emphasized the need for addressing the root causes of⁣ migration, such as poverty, ‌violence, and corruption in countries from which migrants are fleeing.

In addition to the challenges posed by the increase in unauthorized border crossings, Border Patrol agents have‌ also been‍ dealing with the issue ⁤of overcrowded ⁤detention‍ facilities. The surge in arrivals has overwhelmed the⁣ capacity of these facilities, leading to concerns⁤ over the living‌ conditions ⁣and the safety of immigrants, especially children.

The Biden administration‌ has taken steps ⁤to address⁣ these issues, including increasing personnel at the border, enhancing technology and infrastructure, and coordinating⁢ with partner countries to manage migration flows. However, critics⁣ argue that ‍more needs to be done to secure the border ⁤and ensure ⁣the‌ enforcement ‌of ⁣immigration laws.

The issue of immigration continues ⁤to be a contentious topic in the United States, with differing opinions on how to best address the challenges it presents. While some advocate ‍for stricter border ‌control and enforcement, others call for comprehensive immigration reform that addresses the underlying factors driving migration.

As the ‍Biden administration works to address the situation at the border, it is clear that a comprehensive ‍and balanced approach is needed. This includes effective enforcement measures, addressing the root causes ⁤of migration, improving the processing and⁢ treatment of immigrants, and working towards a fair ‍and efficient immigration system.

The challenges faced by the Border Patrol in apprehending a significant number⁢ of unauthorized border crossers highlight the need for continued efforts and collaboration to secure the nation’s borders and ensure‍ the effective enforcement ⁢of immigration laws. It is a complex issue that requires⁢ a thoughtful and ⁤measured ⁢response that takes into account the ⁣humanitarian aspects while also ensuring the safety and security of the country.
