Man Crashes into Home and Stabs Officers After High-Speed Chase
In a shocking incident in Taunton, Massachusetts, a man led police on a dangerous chase after fleeing from a routine traffic stop. The chase ended with the suspect crashing into a home and then brutally attacking five officers, including the local police chief.
The officers, who were attempting to apprehend Douglas Hagerty, 35, of Lakeville, Massachusetts, were injured during the altercation. One officer sustained slash wounds to the face, neck, and back and was rushed to a hospital in Boston for treatment. The other four officers, including the police chief, were treated at a local hospital for their injuries. Chief Edward Walsh, who happened to live nearby, was stabbed in the stomach but has since been released after receiving medical attention.
The condition of the officer taken to the Boston hospital has not been updated yet.
According to the police, the officers attempted to pull over Mr. Hagerty for erratic driving. Initially, he stopped but then suddenly accelerated, narrowly missing one of the officers. During the ensuing chase, Mr. Hagerty deliberately rammed into a police cruiser and another vehicle before crashing into a relative’s home. The officers pursued him into the house, where he brandished a knife and viciously attacked them.
Mr. Hagerty was eventually apprehended and taken to a local hospital to treat injuries to his hand. He appeared in Taunton District Court on Wednesday and is currently being held without bail. A dangerousness hearing is scheduled for October 17. Mr. Hagerty is facing multiple charges, including assault and battery with intent to murder and three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
Attempts to contact Mr. Hagerty or his attorney, Daniel Rich, for comment have been unsuccessful.
