Mark Hamill deletes photo depicting dead Trump after assassination attempt

Star Wars actor Mark Hamill posted a now-deleted image on BlueSky showing President Donald Trump “dead,” prompting backlash. The post was captioned in a way that suggested Hamill wanted Trump killed (“if only”), though Hamill also said he was actually wishing for Trump to stay alive so he could be held accountable. After criticism-including from the White House, which called him a “sick individual”-Hamill deleted the photo and later posted an “accurate edit for clarity” showing Trump’s hair blowing in the wind, apologizing for any offense.

The controversy comes weeks after Trump faced what authorities said was a third assassination attempt in two years, including an attack at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner where a suspect was detained by Secret Service before reaching the ballroom. A White House spokesman condemned Hamill’s post and urged Democrats as well to denounce calls to violence, also pointing to Hamill’s appearance in a video with former President Barack Obama.

Star Wars actor Mark Hamill posted a photo depicting President Donald Trump dead, including the text “if only,” just weeks after the third assassination attempt against Trump in two years.

The since-deleted photo, posted to BlueSky on Wednesday, shows Trump lying in front of a gravesite. While the post suggests Hamill wants Trump dead, the caption shows the actor wants Trump to stay alive to be “held accountable.”

“He should live long enough to witness the inevitable devastating loss in the midterms, be held accountable for his unprecedented corruption, impeached & humiliated for his countless crimes,” he said. “Long enough to realize he’ll be disgraced in the history books, forevermore.”

Hamill deleted the photo after receiving a wave of backlash, including from the White House, which characterized the actor as a “sick individual.”

The actor posted on social media hours after deleting the initial post with a new photo of the president’s hair blowing in the wind, writing that the new post was an “accurate edit for clarity.”

“Actually, I was wishing him the opposite of dead, but apologize if you found the image inappropriate,” Hamill said on Bluesky.

Hamill’s posts came weeks after the president faced his third assassination attempt.

At the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on April 25, a gunman ran through a Secret Service checkpoint at the Washington Hilton, heading toward the ballroom where the president and other members of the administration were.

Secret Service detained the alleged shooter, Cole Allen, before he could get to the ballroom. Allen was later charged with attempting to assassinate the president.

Allen was also charged with discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, transporting a firearm across state lines, and assaulting a federal officer with a deadly weapon, according to the indictment.

This was the first assassination attempt during the president’s second term in office, with the other two attempts occurring during Trump’s 2024 reelection campaign.

White House spokesman David Ingle condemned the post in a statement to Fox News, calling on Democrats to also speak out against the “call to violence.”

“Barack Hussein Obama just appeared in a video with this deranged lunatic three days ago. Now this same person is calling for President Trump to die. Why won’t Obama and Democrats condemn this disgusting call to violence?” Ingle said.

Ingle was referring to a video in which Hamill appeared alongside former President Barack Obama on May 4, also known as “Star Wars Day,” celebrating the holiday and the opening of Obama’s Presidential Center in Chicago.
