Marjorie Taylor Greene votes against sanctioning China over organ harvesting

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia, along with Representative Thomas Massie from Kentucky, voted against a bill that would impose sanctions on China for reports of human trafficking and organ removal and harvesting. The bill was passed with a vote of 413-2 in the House, with only these two lawmakers voting against it. Massie explained that he voted against the bill because he felt it gave the president too much authority to impose sanctions without due process. There is no clear reason why Greene voted against the bill, and she has not commented on the issue.

The legislation, introduced by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), aimed to impose sanctions on individuals involved in forced organ trafficking in China. It required the revocation of passports of those individuals convicted for knowingly transferring human organs for valuable consideration in human transplantation, and the president was to provide Congress with a list of suspects to impose property and visa-blocking sanctions upon. An identical version of the bill has been introduced in the Senate.

Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR), who introduced the bill in the Senate, stated that there is evidence that the Chinese Communist Party is harvesting organs from prisoners of conscience, persecuted religious groups, and inmates. The bill is essential to identify and punish the CCP members responsible for forced organ harvesting and hold Beijing accountable for their actions.

Recent reports have cited a study from the American Journal of Transplantation, which found evidence of Chinese transplant surgeons removing organs before the donors were declared brain-dead, making China a major organ harvester. Similar legislation was introduced last year but failed to make its way to a vote in either chamber of Congress.
