Marilyn Monroe’s Historic Chocolate Wedding Suit Goes On Sale, But It’s Going To Cost You An Insane Amount
Marilyn Monroe’s historic chocolate wedding suit skirt — the one she wore when she married baseball great Joe DiMaggio — has gone up for sale and it’s going to cost you an insane amount if you are hoping to take it home.
Through the “Gotta Have Rock And Roll’ auction house, fans of the late-Hollywood screen legend can score a piece of history when they bid on the two-piece “dark brown serge wedding suit, with a white fur collar on the jacket” that’s described as in “very good condition,” according to the auction site. The starting minimum bid for the suit is set at $1 million.
“The measurements are as follows: Jacket: shoulder to cuff 20″, shoulder to waist 19”, it added. “Skirt: waist measures 27″, waist to hem 25″ The jacket has been shortened from the original length by a few inches, the bottom of the jacket has been folded and hemmed.”
“A tailor should be able to put the jacket back to its original length,” the description about the suit continued. “Very good condition. Comes with original Sotheby’s auction catalog, a Gotta Have Rock & Roll Certificate of Authenticity and the original wire photograph that is pictured in the listing.”
The “Some Like It Hot” star and Yankees superstar tied the knot at San Francisco City Hall on January 14, 1954, the knot noted.
“This was the most important wedding in Pop Culture history,” the description on the auction site read. “Never before has there been a wedding of this stature of two iconic figures that were the leaders in their fields.”
[embedded content]It also shared a link where people can see the newsreel about Monroe and DiMaggio saying “I Do.” The auction house estimates that the wedding suit will go for somewhere between $1.5 million and $2 million. Fans can bid on the suit for another 10 days, when the sale runs through December 9.
The wedding suit was originally purchased at Saks Fifth Avenue by “The Seven Year Itch” star. She then gifted it to the mother-in-law of Milton Greene. Greene was Marilyn’s personal photographer.
DiMaggio was Monroe’s second marriage, but after 274 days the couple called it quits, the outlet noted. Marilyn was previously married for four years to James Dougherty, and after DiMaggio for five years to playwright Arthur Miller.
She died in 1962 of a drug overdose.
