Manchin and daughter seek support for centrist political group: Report
Sen. Joe Manchin and Daughter Launch $100 Million Project to Boost Centrist Policies and Candidates
According to a new report, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and his daughter Heather Manchin are teaming up on a groundbreaking $100 million project aimed at promoting centrist policies and candidates.
Heather Manchin, a former Fortune 500 CEO, revealed in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that she recently established a politically active nonprofit organization called Americans Together. The organization, which she plans to staff soon, is dedicated to fostering political engagement and unity. Importantly, Heather emphasized that the group is separate from her father’s political endeavors, which are still uncertain.
Sen. Manchin’s Political Future
Sen. Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, has yet to announce whether he will seek reelection in 2024. This decision carries significant weight, as his state overwhelmingly supported former President Donald Trump in the previous election. Additionally, there have been rumors of a potential third-party presidential run in 2024. Earlier this summer, Sen. Manchin even contemplated switching his party affiliation from Democrat to independent.
Heather Manchin shared her and her father’s belief that the current political system is deeply flawed and in dire need of repair. “What we both very much agree on is the system is very broken and actually in deep trouble,” she stated. “We have been thinking about what can be done to bring people together.”
A Unique Initiative
It’s important to note that the Manchins’ project is distinct from No Labels, a centrist group seeking alternative candidates to President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. The Manchins’ initiative aims to transcend party lines and unite individuals who prioritize policy and the well-being of the nation.
Sen. Manchin has deliberately kept his political plans under wraps, leaving the political world in suspense. He has expressed his dissatisfaction with the negative connotations associated with party labels, particularly in West Virginia. “The brand has become so bad — the D brand and R brand. In West Virginia, the D brand because it’s [the] national brand. It’s not the Democrats in West Virginia, it’s the Democrats in Washington,” he explained. “You’ve heard me say a million times I’m not a Washington Democrat.”
Potential Challenges
A recent poll conducted by the East Carolina University Center for Survey Research indicated that Sen. Manchin would face a tough battle if he were to run against Gov. Jim Justice (R-WV) in a Senate matchup, with a 22-point deficit. However, Gov. Justice must first navigate the GOP primary race against Rep. Alex Mooney (R-WV).
Overall, the Manchins’ project aims to mobilize the middle, reshape the national narrative, and garner support for individuals who prioritize policy and country over party and politics.
