Virginia Beach Dentist Stabbed to Death in Domestic Dispute with Son

A prominent dentist in Virginia Beach, Virginia, was stabbed to death Saturday in what police have termed a “domestic dispute” with his son, who has reportedly been in the process of transitioning into a female.

Dr. Abbey Horwitz, 68, was pronounced dead shortly before 9 a.m. after responders were called to his home. His son, Michael Aaron Horwitz, 34, who now goes by the name Norah, was arrested and charged with murder and stabbing in the commission of a felony.

A Life of Service

Abbey Horwitz was a native of the Bronx who studied dentistry in Virginia and opened his practice in Virginia Beach. He was also a dedicated community leader who served as president of the Hebrew Academy of Tidewater and the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater.

Horwitz volunteered his services overseas in Israel, Romania, Russia, and Nicaragua, as well as providing community care dentistry for those in need. He was described on his website as “the proud parent” of Michael as well as two other children.

A Family Man

Neighbors remember the Horwitz family for their strong multi-generational gatherings. “He seemed like the consummate family guy, four generations and getting everyone together and really committed to making the effort and creating the environment and just bringing his whole family together,” said one neighbor.

Michael Horwitz was arraigned in a video call on Monday morning and is currently on suicide watch in the male side of the jail. The Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office is required by law to house inmates based on their biological sex, but uses an objective screening instrument to determine housing based on numerous criteria.

This tragic incident is a reminder of the importance of family and community, and the devastating consequences of domestic violence.
