A Majority Opposes CMT’s Decision to Remove “Try That In A Small Town”
A majority of people are against Country Music Television’s decision to remove “Try That In A Small Town” from the channel’s rotation, which was removed from CMT last month.
The song, performed by country singer Jason Aldean, a conservative, was originally released in May, but had its music video released on July 14, with CMT removing the song from its channel a few days later. The removal by CMT, which sparked sharp criticism from conservatives for CMT participating in cancel culture, has been opposed by the majority of the public, with 52% of respondents disagreeing or strongly disagreeing with CMT’s decision; meanwhile, 33% supported the decision, and 15% neither agreed or were opposed to the decision, or did not know, according to the poll conducted by Redfield & Wilton Strategies.
Partisan Divide
The poll, commissioned by Newsweek, found that agreement with CMT’s decision was mostly partisan, with 70% of respondents who voted for former President Donald Trump in 2020 opposing the decision and 61% of President Joe Biden voters in the poll agreeing with CMT’s decision. Notably, there were 24% of Biden voters among the respondents who opposed CMT’s decision.
Gender Divide
Additionally, a majority of both genders in the poll opposed CMT withdrawing “Try That In A Small Town” from its rotation, with 51% of men and 54% of women disagreeing with CMT’s decision.
Last month, Tennessee State Rep. Justin Jones (D) described “Try That in a Small Town” as a “heinous vile racist song that is really about harkening back to days past.” Approximately 50% either disagreed or strongly disagreed with Jones’s statement, while 34% agreed or strongly agreed with his statement.
A total of 1,500 adults were surveyed in the poll.
Surge in Popularity
In the wake of getting removed from CMT, “Try That In A Small Town” has skyrocketed in popularity, with the song’s on-demand audio and video streams going up by 999% in July over the course of a week, going from 987,000 to 11.7 million. The song also recently reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

Aldean’s Response
During his first public appearance since the song’s censorship on July 21, Aldean stated he believes that ”everybody’s entitled to their opinion” but that just because someone thinks something “doesn’t mean it’s true.” He added that in the wake of CMT pulling his song, he “saw country music fans rally like I’ve never seen before” and that “it was pretty bad*ss.”
