Most Americans recognize that the media’s preferred narratives are false news.

Majority of American Voters Disagree with Corporate Media Narratives, According to Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll

Key Results of the Poll

  • A majority of Americans believe the allegations in the Steele dossier and Russia collusion stories are false.
  • A majority of Americans know that the Hunter Biden laptop is real.
  • Most voters surveyed don’t believe the FBI and Department of Justice are fully investigating Hunter’s laptop.
  • A majority of voters think President Biden is not demonstrating his fitness for office.
  • Voters are very concerned about interference by the FBI and intelligence agencies in a future presidential election.

The poll, conducted by Harris Poll and HarrisX, surveyed 2,004 registered U.S. voters online on May 17-18, 2023. The results were weighed by demographics according to their proportion in the population and likelihood of online presence.

Despite the declining trust in legacy media, approximately 70% of Democrats still believe the corporate media lies about the Steele dossier and Russia collusion stories. Similarly, a majority of Democrats still believe the legacy media’s claim that the Hunter Biden laptop was Russian disinformation, despite most Americans knowing that it is real.

Furthermore, almost two-thirds of voters think Hunter Biden was involved in illegal influence peddling and tax evasion, but only half of those polled are convinced that President Biden was involved in his son’s schemes.

As journalist Glenn Greenwald pointed out on Twitter, the poll provides a shocking insight into the number of Americans whose views are unrepresented in the news they watch every day. The poll also shows that large majorities of Americans have serious doubts about President Biden’s mental fitness to be President and believe he is too old. Unsurprisingly, Trump leads Biden by 7 points for 2024, and Kamala Harris by 11 points.

Across partisan lines, voters are also very concerned about interference by the FBI and intelligence agencies in a future presidential election and believe the government needs wide-ranging reform to prevent that possibility.
