Majority of 2028 Democrats silent on Hasan Piker

Most recently, Piker has drawn criticism over comments he made while discussing Jeremy Moss, the Democratic nominee in Michigan’s 11th U.S. House district. The streamer suggested that American Jews are inviting violence upon themselves by voicing support for Israel.

Piker supporters, including progressive candidates who’ve campaigned alongside Piker, have sought to minimize calls to disavow Piker from Republicans and pro-Israel voices.
Abdul el Sayed, the Democratic nominee in Michigan’s U.S. Senate race who counted Piker as a top surrogate, released a statement on Monday that denounced antisemitism and put a little daylight between himself and Piker but stopped short of specifically condemning him.
“Nobody speaks for this campaign besides me and my campaign spokespeople,” he wrote. “And while politicians and pundits try to make this race about a Twitch streamer, we’re going to be talking about gas, groceries, good schools, and health care.”
A handful of Democrats of have fully condemned Piker and his remarks, and none of the leading prospects in the 2028 field have weighed in on the matter.
Just Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), a long-shot candidate, condemned Piker.
“We can, and should, argue fiercely over policy. We should have meaningful dialogue and debate about the policies and actions of the Israeli government and American foreign policy. That is the lifeblood of democracy. But that’s not what this is,” Booker said Tuesday evening. “No American should be told that their political beliefs make them responsible for hatred or violence directed against them. There is a bright line between vigorous debate and rhetoric that stokes hatred toward our neighbors. Mr. Piker has crossed that line, repeatedly and unmistakably.”
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), another long-shot, went as far as to say that Democrats need to “stop wasting time attacking Hasan Piker.”
Democratic Socialists of America member Melat Kiros, the Democratic nominee in Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, outright discounted criticism of Piker.
“Billionaires are draining our resources to develop a technology they want to replace us, millions will lose Medicaid in the new year to pay for tax cuts for the rich, and we’re spending billions on genocidal wars the voters oppose,” she wrote on Wednesday. “But sure, let’s keep talking about Hasan Piker.”
But House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), the likely pick to be speaker of the House pending a Democratic victory in November, rebuked the streamer on Tuesday.
“Those comments were dangerous, malicious, and antisemitic, and should not be tolerated by anyone in the public square. What we’ve seen is a startling rise of hate crimes all across the United States of America, but particularly in this moment, directed against our Jewish brothers and sisters. And everybody, regardless of ideological perspective, should be willing to denounce this rise of antisemitic rhetoric, hate crimes, and bigotry and actually try to move us to a society where we embrace everyone,” Jeffries said during a Tuesday interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. “I’ve just addressed Hasan Piker’s comments as it relates to the Jewish community as forcefully as I can, and I will continue to do that.”
