A federal court has handed down a prison sentence to a prominent Democratic fundraiser and donor who embezzled funds from his taxpayer-funded nonprofit organization.
Dixon Slingerland, the former CEO of the Youth Policy Institute (YPI), a nonprofit aimed at reducing poverty in Los Angeles, was found guilty of using the organization’s resources for personal expenses. These expenses included covering his property taxes, indulging in a lavish $6,000 dinner in New York City, hiring an $11,000 private tutor, and purchasing computer software and hardware worth nearly $2,000.
The Justice Department’s news release revealed that Slingerland has been sentenced to six months in prison, fined $750,470, and assigned 200 hours of community service. The court determined that he misappropriated a total of $600,000 in grant funding. YPI primarily relied on federal government funding, as stated in Slingerland’s plea agreement.
Between 2006 and 2019, YPI received tens of millions of dollars in federal funding, with a significant portion allocated during the Obama administration. Slingerland’s involvement in political fundraising was also notable, as he raised over $740,000 for former President Barack Obama and co-hosted multiple fundraising events for former Democratic Mayor Eric Garcetti.
Furthermore, Slingerland made substantial donations to Democratic causes, contributing more than $100,000 to Democratic candidates and committees from 2006 to 2020, according to the Federal Election Commission database.
As the president of YPI, Slingerland held significant authority, serving as the personal guarantor of the organization’s credit card and having the power to sign checks using its funds. He received a salary of nearly $400,000 as the head of YPI, as indicated in tax documents.
