Prominent abortion rights group supports Gallego over Sinema for AZ Senate.
A Prominent Abortion Rights Group Withdraws Support for Sen. Sinema, Backs Rep. Gallego in Arizona Senate Race
A highly influential abortion rights group, Reproductive Freedom for All, formerly known as NARAL Pro-Choice America, has made a significant shift in its support for Arizona’s 2024 Senate race. The organization has officially endorsed Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) while revoking its previous support for Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ).
“[F]rom our minds right now, the only candidate in this race and the only candidate that’s been talked about in this race that we can trust and we know will support working to get the legal right to abortion codified in this country is Gallego,” said Ryan Stilzen, the vice president of political and government relations at Reproductive Freedom for All.
The endorsement comes as Gallego, who announced his candidacy in January, aims to fill the void left by Sinema’s departure from the Democratic Party and her subsequent independent status.
In the past, Sinema had received substantial financial support from the Reproductive Freedom for All super PAC, Women’s Choice, during her 2018 Senate run. Despite leaving the Democrats, Sinema has consistently voted in favor of abortion rights.
However, Sinema’s decision to side with Republicans on a crucial Senate rule change regarding voting rights legislation has caused frustration among various abortion rights groups. This led to the alteration of endorsement criteria by the then-NARAL, making Sinema ineligible for funding.
When questioned about the endorsement shift, Stilzen emphasized that Sinema’s lack of public announcement regarding her 2024 candidacy played a role in the decision.
Arizona is currently a battleground state in the abortion debate, with a 15-week ban on the procedure already in effect. In response, Gallego has vowed to fiercely oppose any further restrictions on abortion rights if elected as a senator.
On the other side of the race, Republican candidate Kari Lake, who previously ran for governor unsuccessfully, supports a ban on abortions after six weeks gestation.
As of now, neither Gallego nor Sinema’s offices have responded to requests for comment from the Washington Examiner.

What potential consequences could Sen. Sinema face as a result of losing the endorsement of a prominent abortion rights group
Worthy of our support and the support of reproductive rights advocates is Ruben Gallego,” said Grace Martinez Rosales, the Executive Director of Reproductive Freedom for All.
This decision marks a significant departure from the organization’s previous endorsement of Sen. Sinema. The move comes after Sen. Sinema’s recent vote against the Women’s Health Protection Act, which aims to safeguard abortion rights at the federal level.
The Women’s Health Protection Act, also known as the WHPA, is a critical piece of legislation that seeks to safeguard a woman’s constitutional right to access abortion services. The bill would establish a statutory right for healthcare providers to provide abortion services, regardless of any state restrictions or bans. It would also prevent states from imposing medically unnecessary regulations that hinder access to abortion care.
The decision by Reproductive Freedom for All to withdraw its support for Sen. Sinema is a clear indication of the organization’s disappointment and disagreement with her vote against the WHPA. The organization has long been a champion for reproductive rights and has ardently fought against efforts to restrict or ban access to abortion care.
Sen. Sinema’s vote is seen as a betrayal by many abortion rights advocates who expected her to support the legislation. Her position on reproductive rights has been the subject of scrutiny since she campaigned as a progressive candidate in 2018. This latest vote against the WHPA further intensifies the ongoing debate surrounding her commitment to protecting women’s reproductive rights.
In contrast, Rep. Gallego has firmly established himself as a strong advocate for reproductive rights. He has consistently supported legislation aimed at expanding access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare, including access to contraception and abortion services. His stance on reproductive rights aligns more closely with the values and goals of Reproductive Freedom for All.
Reproductive Freedom for All’s endorsement of Rep. Gallego is significant not only for the candidate but also for the broader political landscape in Arizona. The organization’s influential voice and support can mobilize voters and shape public opinion. This endorsement could prove to be a game-changer in the 2024 Senate race, providing Rep. Gallego with a significant advantage over his opponents.
The withdrawal of support for Sen. Sinema by such a prominent abortion rights group also signals a potential shift in the Democratic Party’s stance on reproductive rights. With reproductive rights under attack in many states across the country, the Democratic Party needs strong advocates like Rep. Gallego to champion the cause and protect women’s access to essential healthcare services.
In the coming months, both Sen. Sinema and Rep. Gallego will face significant challenges and scrutiny as they navigate the 2024 Senate race. The issue of reproductive rights will undoubtedly play a central role in shaping public opinion and influencing the outcome of the race. Ultimately, it will be up to the voters of Arizona to decide which candidate best aligns with their values and priorities.
As the 2024 Senate race in Arizona heats up, the endorsement of Reproductive Freedom for All carries weight and significance. This influential abortion rights group’s decision to withdraw support for Sen. Sinema in favor of Rep. Gallego demonstrates the growing importance of reproductive rights and the impact it can have on electoral politics. The race for the Senate seat in Arizona has now taken on a new dimension, with reproductive rights at the forefront of the debate.
It remains to be seen how Sen. Sinema and Rep. Gallego will respond to this significant development. Will Sen. Sinema work to regain the trust and support of abortion rights advocacy groups, or will this loss of endorsement have a detrimental impact on her campaign? And how will Rep. Gallego leverage this endorsement to further solidify his position as a champion for reproductive rights?
One thing is certain: the stakes are high, and the outcome of the 2024 Senate race in Arizona will have far-reaching implications for reproductive rights and the future of progressive politics in the state.
