Luna promises to keep House floor closed until Senate returns from 19-day recess

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) has expressed strong dissatisfaction with Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) for not moving to shorten the july 4th recess to address votes on the SAVE America Act. Thune held a vote to adjourn the Senate late Wednesday, after a contentious day on Capitol Hill, during which President Donald Trump pushed for Senate action on the bill. Luna, a supporter of voter ID laws, announced she would delay reopening the House floor until the Senate returns from its recess, criticizing Thune for going on vacation before the bill’s passage. She and Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) have also vowed to hold up the House agenda over the senate’s inaction on the bill, which mandates voter ID and proof of citizenship. This standoff comes shortly after the House returned from an 11-day recess and traded barbs with the Senate over session length and recess durations, notably during a government shutdown. Luna’s recent statements might prolong the legislative gridlock as the Senate plans to recess until July 13.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) is fuming over Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s (R-SD) decision not to push back the planned July 4th recess ahead of any votes on the SAVE America Act, promising to shut down the House floor as long as the Senate recess lasts.

Thune held a vote to adjourn the Senate late Wednesday evening after a contentious day on the Hill, in which President Donald Trump bucked his plans to sign a bipartisan housing affordability bill in order to demand Senate action on the SAVE America Act. Luna, who has long been a champion of the voter ID law that was thrust back into the center of the Capitol Hill spotlight yesterday, vowed to take matters into her own hands in response to the unanimous Senate vote to adjourn for 19 days.

“I will not be voting to re-open the floor until the Senate gets back to Washington,” Luna wrote on X. “The Senate is literally running and not ONE senator objected to going on vacation before 4th of July. John Thune is running and hiding because he doesn’t want to get voter ID across the finish line.”

On Wednesday afternoon, Luna, bolstered by a group of her conservative colleagues, delayed votes in the House over the Senate’s refusal to act on the SAVE America Act. Thune has consistently maintained that the Senate does not have the votes to pass Trump’s hailed elections act, which would require voter ID and proof of citizenship when Americans register to vote.

Luna and Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) each vowed to hold up the House floor yesterday over the Senate’s inaction on the SAVE America Act, with Luna saying the two have a group of their GOP colleagues in line to hold up the House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) agenda for the week. The chamber’s leadership soon after pulled the procedural vote on this week’s agenda that it had scheduled.

Luna’s standoff came just two days after the House returned to session after an 11-day recess to work in their districts. The House and Senate have traded barbs throughout the 119th Congress over their time in session, which initially came under a microscope when Johnson initiated a record House recess for 54 days during the Fall 2025 government shutdown after passing an initial continuing resolution.

HOUSE DELAYS VOTES AFTER ANNA PAULINA LUNA THREATENS TO SHUT DOWN FLOOR UNTIL SENATE PASSES SAVE AMERICA ACT

But Luna’s X post on Wednesday evening could extend gridlock in the House, as the Senate is set to recess until July 13th.

The Washington Examiner has reached out to Thune’s office for comment.
