Liz Cheney Endorses Fifth Democrat

Dismissing yet another chance to back a Republican candidate, on Saturday, ‘Never Trump’ Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) endorsed Democrat incumbent Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) over GOP challenger Yesli Vega in her bid for reelection in Virginia’s 7th Congressional District.

Cheney’s endorsement said in part:

“We don’t agree on every policy, but I am absolutely certain that Abigail is dedicated to serving this country and her constituents and defending our Constitution. Abigail’s opponent is promoting conspiracy theories, denying election outcomes she disagrees with, and defending the indefensible. We need our elected leaders to be honest, serious, and responsible, which is why I would urge voters in Virginia’s 7th District to support Abigail Spanberger.”

For those who have been following Cheney and her political views, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Spanberger is a former CIA agent.

The endorsement of Spanberger is not Cheney’s first of a Democrat candidate.

Solidly Behind Democrats

At the end of October, Cheney endorsed Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) in her reelection bid. Slotkin, like Cheney, is also very much in support of endless funding for the war in Ukraine.

Cheney also said recently that if she lived in Arizona she would vote for Democrat gubernatorial candidate Katie Hobbs, and Democrat Secretary of State candidate Adrian Fontes.

Cheney’s obsession with all things Donald Trump and her steadfast aversion to backing any Trump-endorsed candidates has been apparent for quite some time. While in Ohio last week, Cheney said she would support Democrat Senator Tim Ryan over his Trump-backed GOP challenger J.D. Vance.

But it seems to be Democrat women that Cheney is all in for. In October, Cheney spoke at a forum at the Harvard Kennedy School, where she praised Slotkin, Spanberger, and Reps. Elaine Luria (D-VA) and Jennifer Wexton (D-VA), both of whom are in competitive races.

Cheney described them as “women whom I may have big disagreements with on some issues, but man, they are there for the right reason.”

She continued saying, “They work hard, and I know that they want what’s best for the country. And I know that we can have a discussion and a disagreement and figure out where we agree. Those are the kinds of people that you can trust with the future of this country.”

Liz Cheney’s Descent Into Trump Derangement Syndrome

Following the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, it did not take long for Liz Cheney to blame Donald Trump for the violence, and the begin throwing her fellow Republicans under the bus as well.

The day of the violence, Cheney tweeted out, “We just had a violent mob assault the US capitol … No question the President formed the mob, the President incited the mob, the President addressed the mob. He lit the flame.”

But Cheney’s fellow Republicans did not play along. In May of 2021, she was ousted from her position as GOP Conference Chair. Wyoming voters weren’t having it either. In the August GOP primary, Cheney was defeated by a whopping margin of 66.3% to 28.9% by her challenger Harriet Hageman.

Liz Cheney’s obsession with Donald Trump has cost her many things, but in the case of endorsing Abigail Spanberger over Yesli Vega, she missed a golden opportunity to promote one the many GOP Hispanic women candidates like Vega.

Trump-endorsed candidates being winners on election night just might be the end of Liz Cheney’s tolerance of the Republican Party.
