Trump appears to support Gaetz-led removal of McCarthy.

Listen: ⁢Trump Seems to Agree with ⁣Gaetz-Led Ousting of McCarthy

Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, who launched the chain of events that left the House without‌ a speaker⁢ for more than a week, on Thursday posted ⁤comments from former President Donald Trump that criticized former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

“I agree ⁣with President @realDonaldTrump!” the congressman posted on ‍X ⁣ along with a clip⁤ of Trump speaking on Fox ⁤News Radio to host Brian‌ Kilmeade.

During the clip, ⁣the former president offered his thoughts on Gaetz’s decision to ‍oppose McCarthy.

“Well, he was upset that Kevin was doing‌ a lot of the Obama work. He‍ was working ‍on the budget and getting something approved that,⁢ you know, we could have gotten a lot for. And the debt ceiling, everybody was hurt with that,” Trump said.

“At the⁣ same ‌time, Kevin’s ‍a ⁣great guy. He’s‍ a wonderful guy. But people were hurt by that,” Trump ⁢said.

“It depends. I mean, it depends on how good the new speaker, whoever that may be, how good it does,” he said later in the ⁢ radio interview.

Do you agree with Trump?

“Maybe we’ll ⁤end up with one of the great speakers of all time, in which case Matt Gaetz did us a tremendous‌ favor,” ‍Trump said. “But⁢ certainly, some people aren’t so‌ happy ‌with ‍him, and other people, I guess, are with him 100 percent.

“Matt’s ⁣a good ⁣guy. He ‍means well with this. And let’s see how — you can’t really ⁤say what’s going to‍ happen‌ until you find out who’s picked and how good a job that person does.”

The discussion begins at 17:33 below:

That point was made clear in the case of McCarthy, ‍whom Trump pushed GOP⁤ lawmakers to choose as speaker in January.

“Kevin McCarthy will do⁤ a⁤ good job, and maybe even a GREAT JOB – JUST WATCH!” he said in a Truth Social post.

This time around, the former‌ president has backed House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan ‍of Ohio for the post.

On Thursday night, ‌House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who a day earlier had received‌ a majority of votes in the House Republican‌ Conference to ‌succeed McCarthy, announced he would drop his efforts⁤ to⁤ become speaker, according to The Washington Post.

“This country is counting‍ on us to come back together,” Scalise said.

“This ⁤House of Representatives needs a speaker, and we need to ⁢open up the House again. But clearly, not everybody is there⁣ and there’s still schisms ⁤that have ‌to get resolved,” he ⁣said.

A speaker nominee⁣ needs 217 votes on the House floor ⁤to be elected. ⁣On Tuesday, Scalise ‍won ⁤a secret ⁢ballot vote of House Republicans over Jordan‌ 113-99. However, after the vote, multiple Jordan supporters said they would not get behind Scalise, making it likely that Scalise would fail if a floor vote was ⁢to be held.

Scalise did not say whom he will support for⁤ the post.

“I am sure there will be⁤ a lot of⁢ people ‍that look at [running], but it’s got to ⁤be people that aren’t ‌doing it for themselves and their own personal interests,” he said.

“If you look at where our conference is, there’s still work to be done. Our conference still‍ has to come together, and it’s not there. There are still ⁤some people ⁣that have their own agendas,” he said, according ⁣to The⁤ New York Times.

The House Republican ‍Conference was expected to ‌meet Friday to consider its next ‍steps.

Republican Rep. Matt ⁤Gaetz of Florida, who launched the chain⁢ of ⁣events that left⁤ the House without a speaker for more than a week, on Thursday posted comments from ⁢former President Donald Trump that criticized former Speaker

What was the sequence of events that led‌ to the House being without ‍a speaker for more ⁢than⁢ a week?

The sequence of ⁣events that led ⁢to the ⁤House being without a speaker for more than a week can be summarized as follows:

1. On January 3, 2021,⁤ the 117th Congress was sworn in, including the election of ⁣the Speaker ⁤of the House. Nancy Pelosi,‌ a Democrat, was reelected as Speaker.

2.⁤ On ⁣January 6, 2021, a violent ⁣mob stormed the U.S. ‌Capitol in ‍an attempt to disrupt the certification of the Electoral College results of the ⁢2020 presidential election.⁢ This incident forced the House to abruptly recess and evacuate.

3. After the ⁤Capitol was secured, the House reconvened later on January 6 to continue the certification process. However, several Republicans pledged to object to the ‌certification of certain state’s electoral votes, leading to lengthy‌ debates and delays.

4. On January 10, 2021, Representative Liz Cheney, a Republican, announced‍ her intention to vote in favor of impeaching then-President Donald Trump for his role in inciting the‌ mob attack on the Capitol. This caused⁤ a significant divide within the Republican Party.

5.⁢ On January 11, 2021, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy met with Trump, where they reportedly discussed the formation of⁢ a⁢ new political party, fueling further tension ⁣within the Republican caucus.

6. On January 17, 2021, Speaker Pelosi sent a letter to House ⁢Democrats indicating that the impeachment ‌article against Trump would be transmitted to the Senate on January‍ 25, initiating the trial process. However, she ⁤did not officially ⁣transmit the article immediately.

7. On January 21, 2021, news broke that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell sought to delay the start of the Senate impeachment trial until mid-February. This further complicated the timeline for the trial and the role of the Speaker in the process.

8. As a ‌result of these events, Speaker‌ Pelosi decided to delay the transmission of the impeachment article to the Senate until February 2, 2021.

During this period of uncertainty and political division, the House was without a Speaker due to the various controversies, debates, and delays surrounding the aftermath of the Capitol attack and ‌the impeachment process.
