Sen. Lindsey graham’s aggressive calls for broader military action abroad are clashing with the Trump governance’s effort to reassure the MAGA base that the United States won’t slip into another long, open-ended war.The article notes Graham’s recent push for strikes against Iran and Hezbollah, possible regime-change moves in Cuba, and even proposals that could involve U.S. ground troops, positioning him as a hawkish voice within the Trump-aligned camp. Critics, including Rep. Anna Paulina Luna and others, accuse him of war-mongering and warn that his rhetoric could complicate the White House’s messaging. The White House and some fellow Republicans downplay any rift, framing Graham as one voice among many and insisting that Trump’s approach remains decisive, while some backers argue Graham’s stance reflects longstanding conservative foreign-policy instincts. The piece also highlights mixed reactions within the party, with concerns that such rhetoric risks undermining a broader America-First strategy.
Lindsey Graham’s war rhetoric complicates Trump’s push to calm MAGA base
Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-SC) media blitz calling for wider military action against Iran and beyond is colliding with the Trump administration’s effort to convince a skeptical MAGA base that the conflict won’t spiral into another forever war.
Graham, a close Trump ally in the Senate, has spent the past week floating the bombing of Iranian and Hezbollah units in Lebanon, calling for regime change in Cuba, and suggesting the public may need to send their sons and daughters to the Middle East. Critics say the rhetoric cuts directly against the White House’s effort to contain fears of Bush-era regime change.
Graham’s many conservative critics say the war and his declaration that the United States is “marching through the world” is the antithesis of MAGA’s “America First” base. The South Carolina Republican offers a blunt rebuttal: “You got your head in the sand.
“To these people, and wherever you’re at, you got your head in the sand,” Graham told the Washington Examiner in a brief interview Tuesday. “The Iranians are trying to build a nuclear weapon, not a power plant. Thank God that Trump acted. If he’d waited another year, they could have broke out and had 10 to 11 [nuclear] weapons.”
Among Graham’s critics is Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), who in a social media post blasted the fellow Republican lawmaker for being among those who “advocate for war everywhere” and suggested his rhetoric is alarming.
“He does NOT tell the President what to do, nor does he control Congress,” Luna posted. “I have spoken with the administration a number of times, as well as other members of Congress over the last week or so, and nothing has changed regarding boots on the ground. NO BOOTS on the ground. If Senator Graham wants to go fight in a foreign conflict, let him be the first to volunteer.”
Graham fired back at her in his remarks to the Washington Examiner. He advised Luna to take her grievances straight to the White House: “She should be critical of President Trump.
“So, is she OK with them continuing to enrich uranium and develop 10 bombs? President Trump made the right call,” Graham said. “Her problem is with Trump, and I am all for Trump. I think Trump’s the best commander in chief, beyond Reagan.”
Graham also reaffirmed that “Cuba is going to fall” and its “communist dictatorship should end” at the hands of U.S. intervention.
“Lindsey Graham hasn’t seen a fist fight he hasn’t wanted to turn into a bombing raid,” Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) said of Graham advocating to bomb Lebanon after a recent classified briefing on Iran. “So, I take it with a grain of salt, dude.”
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) questioned, “What in the world would possess anyone to say this?” in response to a widely spread clip where Graham floated to Fox News host Sean Hannity that when he goes “back to South Carolina, I’m asking them to send their sons and daughters over to the MidEast.”
Trump and senior administration officials have repeatedly declined to rule out the use of ground troops in Iran.
Megyn Kelly, the Fox News host turned independent podcaster, labeled Graham a “homicidal maniac” who “Trump likes and is listening to him, and Trump’s favorite channel is parading him around like a Hefner bunny in stockings on every show.”
The White House denied that Graham was complicating its war messaging and downplayed any rifts in the party over Trump’s military actions.
“President Trump has a very good and candid relationship with Senator Graham,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “Republicans are unanimously supportive of President Trump’s bold decision to launch combat operations and end the threat posed by the Iranian terrorist regime.”
Other Republicans also brushed off Graham’s media blitz. They chalked up his statements, which critics have assailed as warmongering, to the senator’s longtime hawkish foreign policy views.
“Just Lindsey being Lindsey,” Republican strategist John Feehery said.
GRAHAM SAYS US ‘MARCHING THROUGH THE WORLD’ WITH CUBA NEXT: ‘STAY TUNED’
Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC), who is not seeking reelection in November, described Graham’s position as “one voice” among Senate Republicans that does not “necessarily represent a majority or even a plurality” of their members.
“I think what’s playing out, he’s just happy about it because it’s something he’s been calling for as long as he’s been in the Senate almost,” Tillis told the Washington Examiner. “I think what worries me is you can’t be everywhere at once, and I haven’t heard Ukraine mention for a while now.”
