Undeterred by Opposition, Texas Governor Moves Forward with Barrier Installation on Rio Grande
Despite facing liberal opposition, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is determined to implement a plan to install a barrier in the Rio Grande to deter illegal immigrants. In a recent Twitter post, Abbott announced the start of the new marine barrier installation in Eagle Pass, Texas, with the Texas Department of Public Safety overseeing the project.

Abbott first announced the plan for a mobile, floating barrier last month, stating that it would proactively prevent illegal crossings and make it more difficult for individuals to reach the Texas side of the southern border.
While the governor’s plan has received support, it has also faced criticism. Attorney David Donatti from the ACLU of Texas called the chain of buoys along the Rio Grande a “blight on Texas’s moral conscience” and argued that it would not address the underlying reasons why people are coming to the United States.
However, Texas Department of Public Safety Director Col. Steven McCraw defended the innovation, emphasizing that it is intended to deter potential illegal immigrants and prevent accidents and drownings. The barriers, which arrived in Eagle Pass on Friday, will be in place within two weeks, according to Chris Olivarez from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The plan is not without its challenges, as a lawsuit has been filed by Jessie Fuentes, owner of Epi’s Canoe & Kayak Team, who claims that the barrier installation will cause “imminent and irreparable harm” to his business. Fuentes argues that he will be unable to give tours on the Rio Grande and has already experienced difficulties with river access.
Despite the legal challenge, Governor Abbott remains steadfast in his commitment to securing the border. He tweeted, “Texas has a constitutional right to secure our border,” indicating that he is prepared to take the case all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary.
