Neera Tanden Withdraws as OMB Nominee

The Biden administration has suffered its first outright defeat, as the president’s nominee to be director of the Office of Management and Budget, Neera Tanden, withdrew her name from consideration Tuesday after it became clear that she was not likely to muster enough confirmation votes in the Senate. The close Hillary Clinton associate became a lightning rod for criticism due to her history of posting incendiary comments on Twitter. “I have accepted Neera Tanden’s request to withdraw her name from nomination,” Biden said in a statement. “I have the utmost respect for her record of accomplishment, her experience and her counsel, and I look forward to having her serve in a role in my Administration.”

Ex-Trump Adviser Katrina Pierson Nixes House Run

Former President Trump campaign adviser Katrina Pierson, who revealed just two days ago that she was mulling a run for a House seat in Texas, has decided against the move. “I’m not running in TX6, but I’m not closing the door on Congress – stay tuned!” Pierson tweeted Tuesday evening. The Hill reported Sunday that Pierson was “taking steps” to run for the seat in Texas’s sixth congressional district vacated by the death of Rep. Ron Wright (R-TX) last month. “I fully intended on entering the race, which is why I provided a time frame at which I would provide my final decision,” Pierson stated in a text message to The Hill. “This was a very difficult decision to make, but I believe that it was the right decision. There are several other opportunities left to explore.”

Democrats Introduce Bill for RBG Monument

House Democrats have officially submitted a bill to erect a monument on Capitol Hill in honor of the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who has achieved legend status on the left. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) “was joined by 15 other Senate Democrats [in] requesting the Joint Committee of Congress on the Library select an artist to construct the memorial,” Fox News reports. Ginsburg “was an icon and a trailblazer who dedicated her life to opening doors for women at a time when so many insisted on keeping them shut,” Klobuchar said. Ginsburg died in September after serving on the High Court for 27 years.

South Carolina Senate Approves Bill Adding Firing Squad as Death Penalty Alternative

The South Carolina Senate on Tuesday passed a bill that would allow the firing squad as an alternative means of execution. Executions have been halted in the state due to a “nationwide shortage in lethal injection drugs, caused by drug manufacturers who have sought to clamp down on how their products were being used,” The State newspaper reports. “Under current law, inmates have a choice between lethal injection and death by electrocution. If the inmate chooses lethal injection, the state cannot force them to die by means of electrocution, so, by default, the inmate’s execution gets pushed back until the state can obtain the necessary drugs.” The firing squad would provide an alternative to electrocution, paving the way for executions to proceed once again.

California’s I-5 Strangler Killed in His Prison Cell

Roger Kibbe, California’s notorious “I-5 Strangler” who was sentenced to multiple life prison terms for killing at least seven women over a span of two decades, was found dead in his cell Sunday in what officials say is being treated as a homicide. “At around 12:40 a.m. Sunday, a corrections officer at Mule Creek State Prison in Amador County was conducting a routine population count when he found Kibbe, 81, lifeless on the floor of his cell with his cellmate, Jason Budrow, 40, standing there,” The Sacramento Bee reports. “Prison guards rushed Kibbe to the prison’s infirmary, but he was pronounced dead around an hour later.”

Moscow Foreign Ministry Slams Biden Sanctions as ‘Hostile Anti-Russian Lunge’

New U.S. sanctions imposed by the Biden administration Tuesday against Russia for an alleged poisoning attempt against Vladimir Putin political opponent Alexi Navalny are evidence of a “hostile anti-Russian lunge” that will damage relations between the two nations, Russia’s Foreign Ministry says. “We will respond based on the principle of reciprocity, but not necessarily symmetrically,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova declared in a statement. “The intelligence community assesses with high confidence that officers of Russia’s Federal Security Service used a nerve agent to poison Russian opposition leader Alexi Navalny,” White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki stated of Biden’s decision.

Thai Anti-Government Activist Arrested For Burning Portrait of King

Insulting the monarchy is a serious crime in Thailand, and an anti-government activist is the latest citizen of the southeast Asian nation to be hauled in for it. Musician Chaiamorn “Ammy” Kaewwiboonpan, 32 was arrested in Ayutthaya province north of Bangkok. He is accused of setting fire to a portrait of King Maha Vajiralongkorn Sunday “in front of a Bangkok prison where four prominent activists are being held,” Reuters reports. Chaiamorn faces up to 15 years in prison if found guilty. He also faces charges of arson and trespassing on government property. “We have both witnesses and forensic evidence,” Bangkok police chief Pakapong Pongpetra said at a news conference of the arrest, Reuters reported.
